JWM - Just a Test (Trance produced in Korg Gadget 3!!!)
Two and a half weeks after I released the "Across the Platforms" EP, I've returned to music! This time in Korg Gadget. I finally realised I could use my own drum samples in Gadget 3 in nested folders and such, so all the drum samples you hear come from various sample packs, with most coming from Black Octopus' "Leviathan 4" sample pack! And the "jv1080 pizzi" sound is from an old Image-Line sample pack.
The reason I shyed away from Gadget for near 9 months is due to the fact their drum samples are a bit weak. A bit like Vengeance drum samples - aka not punchy enough for my tastes. 😂
Anyways, I mastered this track in FL Studio Mobile of all things if you can believe it. ❤️ Its multiband compressor, limiter, and analyser are very top tier and easy to use.

Nice work man! Keep it up.
Thank you, my friend.
Always a pleasure to hear from you. How are things going for you these days?
Nice work Jim! The mix and master sounds great. I agree getting a good mix and mastering in Gadget is close to impossible. At least for me.
Synchronicity! Funny enough after many months, probably more than a year, this weekend I’ve been also making a song in Gadget 3! I had an old loop I had made a while back. I never made anything out of it. Finally got something working with it. I’m gonna finish it in Logic on iPad.
Cheers bud!
Been slowly getting back into IOS. Went to the dark side for a while. A brother from church have me his old mac book 2011ish and I spent a lot of time on that but I just got so sick of moving a mouse and then the track pad got me so tired I just gave up messing with it. So went back to my old 5th Gen iPad. Was so busy at church with new worship team amd playing electric hadn't had a chance to really make music. But now as a grandpa, my little granddaughter loves coming over and tap here and there on the old iPad and keyboards so I'm so excited to teach her and the other little one already interested.
It's so fun to teach the new generation about this wonderful gift of music God has blessed us with.
This had my head bobbin almost immediately. You are correct sir, dem drums PUNCH! Also loved the string swells toward the end. Cool sounds!
Weelllll fk me sideways
Was just transported back to my old addictions of Magik III and Baby Anne's Live From Las Vegas set
I made the initial comment since... I haven't thought about those albums in YEARS, definitely not since I've started seriously learning production
And now I'm going to have to go back and re listen with new ears -- just hearing the second build in your track, realizing it's simply a quite low attack on the strings that give the ethereal appearance (didn't know how's or whys 20+ years ago)... What else can I personally unearth?!
My brain is asplode
And your talent is once again on elegant display with this one!
Aaaaand now another genre to dissect and reobsess over, while still pursuing My Perfect Boombap plan of attack 😅
@reezygle Cheers mate.
For me, I can get a decent mix in Gadget itself. In fact, the entire "Just a Test" track was mixed down in Gadget while being fed into a cranked-up DeeMax. I used to think DeeMax was rubbish but never asked for a refund. Mate, DeeMax is excellent for magnifying mixes in Gadget so I can hear mistakes and frequency clashes clearer.
Gadget 3's 8-band EQ is a godsend, because its old 3-band EQ really sucks for mixing. 😂 I used to do "Gadget-only" challenges, using said 3-band EQ, and got mediocre results. And, as I mentioned, the drum gadgets in Gadget aren't punchy enough. Okay, so Gadget 3 also has a transient shaper, but honestly? I like the drums from Black Octopus' Leviathan series as well as Sounds of KSHMR drums and Image-Line drum samples as well.
Anyways, when exporting from Gadget, I turned DeeMax off and fed the unmastered version into FL Studio Mobile for the mastering process. I quite like FLSM a bit more than Cubasis 3 for mastering since I can insert a Leveller, then a Multiband Compressor on the "Crispy" preset, a limiter with the threshold down to roughly -1dB (to ensure plenty of headroom for when the track is inevitably downsampled into a lossy audio format), and the analyser which has great LuFS monitoring. For whatever strange reason, to my ears, FLSM produces punchier masters than Grand Finale 2 does. (Yep, controversial hot take, ymmv and all that.)
@Tones4Christ Amen to that, mate. God has given us this gift for a reason.
And I truly believe He loves when we use our gift to honour Him.
I hope soon to create an upbeat EDM Gospel song that honours Him but also doesn't come off as cringe. 😅 (I've yet to make a Christian song that doesn't come off as hokey. 🫣 Not for a lack of trying either, but I want to get the Gospel across without it coming across as pompous pontification.)
And it warms my heart to read that you're not only returning to music, but also teaching your little ones about the gift of music.
@Squishy I'm glad you love the sound choices, mate.
Those string swells are from Korg Module (the Glasgow gadget). And yes, I love Black Octopus' Leviathan drum samples. They are definitely worth the money for the anthology (Leviathan 1-4). Better than anything Splice has to offer, at least from my personal experience with Splice.
@PapaBPoppin Thank you so much, mate.
Your compliments mean a lot.
I hope you enjoy revisiting Magik III and Baby Anne's Live from Las Vegas. ❤️ I'm going to have to check that out for myself on Youtube if I can find it.
Ah, and Boombap. I love that genre of HipHop. (Actually, I love all HipHop, including the modern era music. Although my top HipHop will always be the Golden Age from the late 90s-2000s before Soulja Boy became popular).
