Dark Clouds

One of my favorite pastimes is to take an acapella vocal track and put “music” to it. I found this track by a lovely young lady named Odarka on the Looperman web site. I think the original tempo was 126bpm. Not sure what key, so I just took a wild ass guess. I put down several layers in different tempos that seemed to line up occasionally. Some might find this difficult to listen to, or maybe not. I was somewhat satisfied with the end result. It could be a lot worse. Peace.

  • Really nice work putting these parts together into an expressive whole.

I think she has a really nice, expressive voice. I’ve used a few of her other acapella tracks in the past and was pleased with the results.

I might play around with Mozaic later today. As you know, I don’t use any external keys or controllers, so I’m always looking for options to generate interesting MIDI data. In the past I made a nice living scripting Perl and PHP. Maybe I can put that to good use.

Best wishes to you and your wife. You are in our prayers.

The big difference with Mozaic is that is executes blocks of code in response to realtime inputs:

MIDI event types: Notes On or Off, CCs, Metronome events (bar or pulse)
User touches: pads, knobs, sliders, x-y grid
    Time events: timers

The arrays are one dimensional… if that bothers you, then create several and access them using the same index.
That will have the effect of a multidimensional array.

  • Wow, i think this turned out really well! You gave this a very dreamy and intimate vibe.

  • @Blipsford_Baubie It seems that the key and tempo that the artist indicates doesn’t always match what I’m hearing. I listened to a few others that applied music to this acapella. Mine is totally different. I don’t know if she likes it. She never replied. Oh well. Thanks for listening, bro.

I can handle a one dimensional array, but it’s so boring. I prefer a double linked list. I have often thought that SoundCloud could benefit from that approach, rather than that goofy Spotlight thing. It’s such an obvious hack. I like how Bandcamp lets me shuffle tracks around in any order I like. I prefer the look of the Bandcamp presentation better, too. The downside is that I don’t get any plays there. SoundCloud looks like a 13 year old developed it, but I get plays there. SoundCloud reminds me of Apple. They write poor software, but they package it nicely. You can polish a turd. Their users expect it to crash, and just live with it. They made a good decision to move to Unix, but they couldn’t leave a good thing alone. We had a client that insisted on running an Apple server with OS X. They fucked with the file system. So, of course, I had to develop a special distro just for that. The beauty of Linux is that everything is exactly where you expect it to be. It didn’t matter whether it was Red Hat, Mandrake, Mint, Ubuntu, etc. Sadly, Red Hat sold out. My favorite was Mint. My wife never knew she was using Linux. I’m starting to ramble again. One last thing… Perl is butt ugly. I had to say that. Hope the two of your are doing well. Peace.

Nicely put together piece! I always enjoy your creations. I hope you share this with the young lady, I’m sure she will be flattered.

Speaking of Linux, I use Mint mainly, but still put up with windows now and then. Mint fits my thinkpads like a glove.

Thanks Dav! Whenever I use one of these vocal tracks, I always contact the artist. Only two have replied. I tried again today with this young lady. We’ll see.

I had my wife’s computer running Linux Mint and it looked exactly like a Windows desktop. She did our banking with it, and I felt a bit more secure. I currently use Ubuntu, but rarely use my desktop anymore.

I do like this iPad, though. It does everything that previously required a roomful of keyboards, guitars, basses and drums, a bunch of recording equipment, and 3 or 4 other musicians. All of my musical buddies have either moved away or passed away. I enjoyed decades of doing it the old fashioned way, and loved it, but this new way suits me just fine. I get to pick all of the music!

Looking forward to more music from you. Have a great week.
