@richardyot : Those drums are rocking and really drive the song. Love the cymbal work (I’m a sucker for that), as well as the toms and fills. The guitar is wonderful as well and gives me a heaping of nostalgia as well, which I love. Makes me feel so much younger. For a song about looking laded, it reminds me I can’t quite enough of that sound.
@klownshed : Wonderful chord changes, and the drums nicely carry everything along. The piano is lovely, and I like the turn to a more haunting section in the middle.
@benjaminprofane : Fantastic vocals. They had me entranced all the way through. I really enjoyed the muted guitar work (or was that bass?) as well. Excellent overall groove and track.
@DavidEnglish : derful meditative track. The strings really nicely complement the piano.
@Ailerom : This is a super fun and driving track. Love the guitar parts and everything that supports them.
Great bass line, which is hugely enhanced by the delicious analogue-sounding bass patch.
The other synth sounds that swirl around it are melodic and compelling, and I love the variety in the arrangement.
@richardyot
Always great guitar playing and singing.
Great drums. I don’t think I noticed toms in your tracks before. I’m sure they’ve always been in your tracks, but I definitely noticed how great they sounded in this one.

@klownshed
Not sure why, but the intro made me think of Led Zep’s “In The Light”
I like how the track changes over time with a new layer coming in while another might drop. I kinda noticed that a melody came together from the short phrases on the first part, which I thought was really cool.

@noisehorse
Very well played track, and some nice melodies. Clever rhyming on the lyrics like the part with “together” “whether” and “weather”— that made me smile.
The bridge was nice too.

@bejaminprofane
Maybe I’m nuts, but I got some Marvin Gaye vibes, if he was using modern production. Really soulful, and a really good listen.

@DavidEnglish
Very sweet sounding. Everything is arranged so perfectly in your tracks. I think their “simplicity “ is deceptive. I don’t know if I’m making sense. I guess I’m just thinking that you make it sound easy when it’s anything but!

@Ailerom
As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another’s treasure.
Really cool riffs and solos. Everything sounded good over that backbeat. Some of this brings to mind the solo work of the shredders I love, like Steve Stevens. If this is garbage, I can’t wait for the stuff you feel is good!

@peanut_gallery
Niiice sounds with the patches. I really like the rhythm of the chords; it’s very cool. Looks like you even got a little reggae bounce in there too that got my head bobbing.
Made on the iPad with NanoStudio 2 (RIP), and with Synthesizer V’s Natalie on vocals. Lyrics and instrumentals by me.
Hoping for overall feedback on mix, instrumentals, vocals and lyrics. I had to use waves harmony to re-pitch the outro vocals by 4 semitones to get it where I wanted. Hoping for ideas on where to best place some vocal harmonies to accompany the main vocal.
Hope you enjoy the listen!
A Little Courage

There are some cool bits in it. I think the guitars could do with a more Industrial Metal style rhythm track to bring out the guitars more.
As you've already alluded to, it could do with a bit of an edit structurally; It sounds like it's mixed by the guitarist :-) As a non-guitarist I'd simplify the structure a bit and make a more ABACAB type arrangement and have a section or 2 without guitars so the guitar's power doesn't get diluted by being ever present.
IMVHO this is a case of too many ideas which is never a bad thing as it's easier to cut ideas out than try and come up with new ones when arranging. It's not garbage, but it is a bit rambling
BAM looks like fun! It looks like it could make it quite fun to jam out arrangement ideas with. You have more than enough stuff there to make a really cool song.
Sounds very lush and 80s synth pop. The sounds go together very nicely.
I think a bit of shaker/tambouring playing 16th (subtle mind) would help give a bit of groove to the drums which are a little staid in places. Logic's drummer is pretty great at making shaker and tambourine loops.
Yes! You see it the way I do I think, hence why I called it garbage. I started the song purely to learn how to use BAM. By the end of this track I have a pretty good handle on using BAM. But like you said, too many ideas. I wasn't trying to make music so much as just adding idea upon idea trying BAM features. And by the end it's just too much, without modifying the arrangement and creating a song structure. I tried turning guitars up (and down), but they were too loud in some sections and I was not worried about it, not caring about automation etc. Thanks for the comments.
It's really not garbage. But it does need a bit more structure but you have all the constituent parts. It shouldn't be too hard to jam out arrangement ideas until you get something really good. BAM looks like it should be really fun for that.
When I'm struggling with a structure I like to export stems to BlocsWave/Launchpad to jam out arrangement ideas on my phone. BAM looks like it's already there for that part... Stems are cool as it stops me tweaking though and BW is instant gratification and I can load in parts I don't remember making and end up with something completely different.
Anyway, thanks for posting. I hope my comments came across OK!
Feel free to be ruthless with my track! It's not one of my favourites!
Very good song. 👍
The main synth part works very well and I think the vocal melody and lyrics are great.
The synthesized vocal sounds a bit flat and lifeless, but I think that's just the nature of the beast. With a song this good I would be tempted to get a vocalist to redo the vocals - you can find great singers on Fiverr for not that much money.
A couple of years ago I hired a couple of singers from there to sing on this track, I paid them £30 each:
I woke up just before dawn and rushed to the bow of the ship. That long-dreamed-of island had finally become a reality, a few nautical miles ahead of us...
A fun piece showcasing your guitar chops and production skills. I have to agree with you, though nicely done, I miss a bit your usual tight and focused songwriting skills. Maybe drop the axe for a while and start singing, there's clearly space for that !
Flipping the coin as I write 😉
The track is very well produced, with nice selection of sounds in perfect adequation with the 80s lush synth pop aesthetic. Great job
Garbage in the sense that, look in a bin, it's just stuff piled on top of more stuff without much thought beyond placing it there. I'll be honest, for sure, which is the same as ruthless most of the time.
That’s a great track, @richardyot! I was also thinking not too long ago about Fiverr but for guitar. it’s useful to hear about your experience with them. Maybe I’ll open a thread to ask about people’s experience with it and get tips on what to expect.
Also, thanks for listening to my track and letting me know your thoughts. That was really encouraging to hear, and it’s much appreciated!
The experience in Fiverr is pretty straightforward: just search for female vocalist, give a price range, and a lot of options will show up. You can then listen to individual singers before contacting the ones you like.
Thanks Richard 👍 I think I will do it once I have a few songs for an EP.
Wow. 👌👍✌️👏
I did this 9 years ago, life was simpler at this time
I split the vocal stems from a Beck song and made a dub cover (remix? reimagining? 🤷🏻♂️)
https://m.soundcloud.com/llooooppss/heart-is-a-drum-beck-dub
The intro took me back to Future Sound of London's Papua New Guinea, great atmosphere and set the scene beautifully for the minimal electronica to follow. Love the clave-like percussion sound and the choir-like pad. The busy hats flitter about while the other textures weave around the steady bass. Enjoyable track.
My favourite Beck song, and a really interesting treatment with the dub bass and the synth sounds replacing the usual instruments. Beck meets Lee Scratch Perry. The horns are my favourite touch, but the reggae beat and dub delay all add something fresh to an already great song.
@richardyot
Cheers! Comin up on a year since I bought my iPad and started making music on iOS. This has been an on and off project and developed as I accrued more apps and discovered what Apple has to offer. Started as recorded tracks in AUM, then 4pockets Multitrack, then eventually “caving” and getting cubasis (haha I tried so hard to make AUM a DAW). Also discovered the limitations of my older, refurbished iPad Pro (wanted to add guitar and more effects but started getting the CPU crackles). A learning experience for sure, but I’m having a blast on this platform.
Thanks for creating this space in the forum for sharing, btw!
Cool range of sounds in the intro. I hoped that was going to continue. Had a great sound that evoked a lot of dark imagery in my mind. The rest of the song is hard to comment on. It's not my kind of music. The piano was cool as it had a very raw sound to it. I would have preferred a nice pad over the choir sound. Just the bass, percussion and piano were enough to carry it along for me.
A sweet sounding little ditty with a positive vibe. I'm starting to learn that not many people are pitch aware so it is probably irrelevant to point out the pitch issues with the vocal. Personally though, I think the vocal tone suits the song and I could enjoy it completely if not for the off pitch singing. I found the bass a bit loud too, but the tone is suited to the song. Nice open mix though, as everything comes through clearly.
Really nice tune. The vocal has some really good qualities to it. There are Thom Yorke and Jeff Buckly vibes to me. A well mixed, well written song of whatever genre it is. The bass track is fantastic and the vocals are really good. The rest has a pretty generic vibe but sounds great. The vocal and bass give it a unique quality. Nice job.
Beautiful complement of moody piano and soulful strings. These 2 aspects interplay very well to capture a song full of melancholy emotion.
Classic 80s vibe for me. Got me thinking about an era (Beverly Hills Cop) when everything had these musical elements. I get a good feeling from this because I was an 80s kid. Nicely done and captures that style very well. Classic instrumentation choices.
It's not that I am particularly into the song, but with a nice vocal track it is hard to go wrong. I don't know what came first. Fitting unrelated (or partly related) vocals to a track is hard work. It's come off really well here. So well in fact that the only thing I could add is that I think it could be great if the vocal was tweaked more so that it sits with the mix better. It sounds like two separate entities, a backing track and a vocal. But I know how hard it is to make that final 10% come together. There are some pretty unfortunate vocal notes in there toward the end but I gather you are aware of that.
That clave is a bit intense at the start, but it seems to settle a bit as the rest of the mix comes in. Still too loud for me at times. I feel like more effort could go into instrument choices. The brass synth and a shaker?/hat? sound were not suited to the mix in my useless opinion. But the bass is well done. I'd probably find it more to my taste if the bass and drums were a more central part of the tune. But this is a result of your choices and you may well have got exactly what you want. Around the 4 minute mark is where I started to enjoy the song most.
@richardyot : “Pink-Floyed” song, very nice instrumentation. The mono-pitched voice suit you well, an overall very enjoyable track
@NoiseHorse Interesting track. I like the melody and how it is played. Just let the track “breath” a bit more and stop singing to give more place to the instruments
@benjaminprofane Just wow…this is crazy good. I saw that you mention Thom Yorke in your tags and I think it is completely fair. Beautiful song, work of art ! I’m a fan
@Ailerom Amazing track, I really like the distorted guitar at the end. Maybe push a bit more the bass and a bit of stereo to my taste
@DavidEnglish Well this is very in line with the kind of music you like to produce. Beautiful atmospheric song, I enjoyed it
@klownshed Nicely evolving electro-music with a very retro drum-track mixed with more recent synth. Very good
@peanut_gallery Could have been in the Top Gun soundtrack (the first Top Gun). Sounds a bit too retro to my taste but well done
@AlexY I like this track very much. The voice is beautiful and it could have been a Kim Wild song (and I say it in the good way)
