Did you see my suggestion above?
I hadn’t but just read it. I don’t see anything about it running in the background. Am I missing something? My use case is running a stand alone sequencer to send MIDI to Sessions.
v3.1!!!
Problem solved with version 3.2
Sessions 3.2 includes the following improvements:
Sessions for iPad can now run in the background while using other apps.
This behavior can be selected using a new 'Run in Background' option in Audio Settings.
Sessions for iPad will no longer interrupt audio from other apps when it becomes the
foreground app.
For iOS. What is the advantage over using AUM?
You really good at finding and documenting the potential shortcomings of IOS apps. You know your audience.
This app will go over well with the Keyboard Corner crowd who have multiple keyboards used to make money playing live:
https://forums.musicplayer.com/forum/28-the-keyboard-corner/
You know the type… the guys that actually stuck with the piano, accordion or organ lessons and can read sheet music,
chord charts or play by ear.
This app is NOT a replacement for our beloved AUM but as a Drambo owner I still have apps that do 5% of what Drambo
can do. Knowing now what I didn’t know then, I bought way too any apps.
First thing I drooled about when I saw this app was the possibility to load a favourite guitar patch and jam to a drum track, recording only the guitar (clean or wet signal). If it went well I have a guitar track, full of potential bits for a song. Sadly, not possible. Yet?
I’m loading “Auditor-File Player” for the backing track requirement… I haven’t figured out how to get a file player to respect the Sessions Transport but I’ll keep looking. (Maybe Ableton Link?)
The dev’s website confirms Ableton support (but maybe only Mac… hedging my bet).
https://www.openplanetsoftware.com/sessions/
I also noticed this developer has an app called “Perfect Tempo” which adjusts a tracks tempo without changing pitch.
Very handy to slowly add speed when learning new material. It’s NOT an AUv3 but that would be a nice feature to embed
in Sessions for file playback with a twist. They also have a “Just Record” (Not AUv3) app which might also be good code to add to
Sessions. Another app bundled with these 2 is an addictive puzzle game (all three for $9, I think).
“Sessions” was discussed ay “the Keyboard Corner” forum in September 2024 when the Mac version dropped.
That forum is NOT excited by software as a general pattern. I just took a snapshot of the entire thread… yes the *entire thread:
Shame Auditor-File Player doesn't record. But there has to an auv3 that does right. Like the 4Pockets multi-track plugin.
4Pockets “Neon Audio EDitor” is an AUv3 app that records and plays back audio. I recall it has host sync too. I’ll try that one.
UPDATE: If you select SYNC in “Neon (editor)” it will start and stop with the Sessions transport control.
Sessions labels it as Neon (editor) in the AUv3 app selector. The search feature is fast and reliable.
That is a better idea. I also thought of Thafknar, but the 4P is probably better. I assume if I place it at the end of the guitar chain I'll be set. Or the front if I want a dry signal.
Thafknar is an Impulse Response Reverb. Maybe you replied to another comment?
By the way, I don’t think I would use Session for a quitar scenario. Personally, I like the OverLoad TH-U stuff for quitar.
By there are many and the NAM Modeler is the current hotness.
OverLoad TH-U loads in Sessions, and yes it's good so would be one of the guitar plugins I'd use.
Thafknar is an audio recorder player in standalone. The AU is just for convolution.
Well damn that's not the way I read it. Thanks for the inside intell. I think if Neon records in auv3 mode it's a goer.
Thafknar records sounds so you can make your own IR files to use for convolution.
It fun to make IR’s that extend reverb lengths for super spacey clouds. Some of the recording ends up being audible so I like to record TV for the spoken words or sound effects. Vacuum cleaners add some nteresting noise.
Not all threads related to iPad/ios & software are as desolate over there as the one related to Sessions…there are quite a few AUM and Camelot Pro users at KC, it’s not all about hardware all the time…
For example this thread now at 14 pages
https://forums.musicplayer.com/topic/185410-ipad-as-a-serious-musical-instrument/page/14/#comments
The LP forum & KC forum both have been extremely informative & helpful to me personally in my iPad music journey, just sayin’…😎✌🏼
You’re pretty new here:

So, WELCOME! We need new users that participate. I’m assuming you’re a keyboard player. Is that true?
How long have you been reading the Keyboard Corner?
I used to check it regularly but those folks tend to be pro keyboard players… @Linearlineman tried to sing the praises
of IOS iPad for music production and found there were not a lot of sympathetic musicians there (I hope invoking his name
gets him to weigh in). He also tried a classical pianist forum and left quickly because he improvises all his music and
doesn’t play from the printed score.
Do you have an opinion on any of the keyboard performance apps:
Sessions
Mainstage (Mac Only)
Camelot Pro
Numa Player (which Numa loads with an array of playable keyboards - Piano, EP, etc)
AUM - which is designed for us as an AUv3 Mixer but suitable for live keyboard uses
There are probably more…
I lurked here for about a year before registering, thanks for the welcome, I try to contribute best I can. Yes I play keyboards. I lurked at KC for several years before registering not too long ago.
I do play for a living but it’s also my passion and main way of survival/keeping sane.
The IOS scene at KC is hit and miss for sure, a lot of the members use hardware and/or laptops, but there’s quite a few of us over there who are using tablets and/or phones.
I’ve been using AUM for about a year now, recently got a Studiologic SL88 Mk2 to use with my iPad. Had been controlling it with a Kawai ES920 but have to pursue a warranty claim on it so it’s out of commission. Mixed feelings about the SL but mostly positive…
Downloaded Numa player not very impressed haven’t got much use out of it.
Have no hands on experience with MainStage Sessions or Camelot Pro as hosts, love AUM, mainly use Pianoteq8, several GSI apps, Korg Gadget and Module, Pure Strings, Moog apps (Mini, AniMoogZ) OB-Xd 3 and very recently got Cubasis 3 and Iconica Sketch on sale.
Thanks again!
The closest member to your CV might be @Dav. Check out his postings… he tends to make them actual file downloads.
This was his first creations made with IOS:

This was also my solution until the Sessions developer integrated a file player.
For this I used the ingenious MultiTrack Recorder from 4Pockets as AUv3.
Works very well. You can play the keyboard to audio files in Sessions to develop ideas or record them using MultiTrack or the integrated recorder and export them if necessary.
Yonac Aries and Session. I can't get Leslie speed connected to the sustain pedal on my midi keyboard. In stand alone I can select cc 64 and midi learn. It doesn't work from within Session. It works fine with King B.
Mac has MainStage... for $30. Considering all you get for that price (including Alchemy synth), it's going to be a tough sell on that platform.
Maybe not. Practically every comment that I read about MainStage is it's far too much trouble to set up. Something more straightforward might do well.
Though without audio track players I honestly can't ever see using it myself.
The nice feature of MainStage on a Mac was that it exposes all the synths and instruments from Logic Pro to the keyboard user for $30 when Logic Pro cost $199. That’s a significant value. Maybe the complexity stems from the massive amount of sounds that can be selected from using the rather menu heaven Logic Pro interface.
Not “in” Sessions but “in parallel” works as expected.
Thanks! Does it work on an iPad? Am I better off with MG3?
I was only referring to the iOS side of things due to the nature of this forum. So, yes, as per the video, MG2 does work (and always has worked) on an iPad, in the way described in the video. MG3 for iOS has been removed from TestFlight so your only option on an iOS device at present is MG2.
Does anyone know if the always on recorder is for audio only or does it also do midi?
