I wish there were more videos that ........?

Good morning, afternoon and evening. I am slowly getting back into this whole video, tutorial, sharing my music and life journey. I am fishing for video ideas if there is a gap that needs to be filled. I have ideas but wondering if there is anything I should be focusing on more than others.

What are people watching these days on YouTube? I know I have enjoyed videos where people are making stuff more so than just demos. I really like challenges where there is a time constraint or something. I also really enjoyed the series Andrew Huang did called sonic boom. Basically anything that shows more actual production and creation instead of "look at this cool thing, have some GAS".

I know I haven't been real active in the past few years so for anybody who doesn't know me.

Here is my YouTube channel and I have been messing around on the ol' TikTok as well.

  • Glad to see you back in the action and a bit. I like your videos, and your spirit.

I actually vote for more tutorials. I think you’re really good at them. Previous ones were very helpful to me.

  • I’d like to see more LP4 videos for one

  • @johnfromberkeley thanks for those kind words. I do have some tutorial ideas in mind.

    @Telstar5 LP4?

    Ditto.

  • Some creators and videos I particularly enjoy:
I think Jakob Haq does really good videos - his videos are a good blend of tutorials, covering app features, and opinion pieces. Very well edited with great pacing imo. His Groove Rider 2 video is a good showcase.

“App synthesis” would be a cool topic and would pair well with a series aimed at the process of making a song or album start to finish. How to mix apps creatively via sound design, plugin suggestions, working in specific DAWs. I very much enjoyed a MikaFastfinger video about his process of finishing a song start to finish starting in KORG Gadget.

These are both very long, but could be broken up into more bite sized videos if a 60+ minute long video is too daunting a task (and I wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking that).

On the other hand, I think dedicated tutorials should be to the point. A lot of unscripted or loosely scripted tutorials can get rambley (that should be a word). Some can be particularly slow to the point where I play them back at 1.5-2x speed.

The team at @moForte have a series for GeoShred going over a range of topics covering the basics, advanced features, fringe use cases, and user requests. Watching them start to finish really helped me wrap my head around the app and pull out a lot more utility than I thought was available.

On the other other hand, if you’re gonna go the less structured route make it a more laid back tone. I enjoy @Jadestar live stream videos a lot. They go pretty in depth on specific apps, has a good chat with questions and suggesting, gives well thought out opinions, and just a great vibe. I’ve gotten a lot out of his SWAM Sections and Pen2Bow videos.

I watched a few of your videos, and particularly liked the Top AUM Tips. I wasn’t as big a fan of the 30 minute Xequence 2 in AUM video. The AUM one was focused and punchy with a good run time for the topic (~7 minutes). Xequencer 2’s script felt a bit too unstructured. The series on Xequence 1 tutorials landed much better with me.

I’d like to see topics covered across multiple video types. Here’s a structure I think would work well: 5-15 minute tutorials on a specific app or topic (Xequencer, MIDI routing between apps, etc) with portions that can be pulled out as shorts for easy reference. After a few videos are made, stitch it together as a long form docutorial.

I want more videos on the music made in iOS. Lots of tutorials and opinion pieces don’t reference how actual artists are using the apps. If you’re covering an effect plugin, showcase how it can be used to replicate a specific song. Doesn’t matter if it’s the biggest name in EDM or bedroom indie guitarists - just showcase musical examples. Here’s a good example from Akayo using Serum on desktop to replicate synth sounds:

These are all just my opinions, but I hope this helps give an idea of what I like. I tried to cover a broad range of videos but it ended up pretty tutorial focused. Hopefully it all came off as constructive criticism.

  • I wish there were more videos that explained and demonstrated midi connections.
Nothing specific at the moment but in the past I’ve hit so many blanks and dead ends….. drives me nuts

    I second this.

  • I third the midi connections and connecting gear in general. Lot of new people come into the space and RTFM is not always the answer.

  • oh, and does it work with the iPad, midi and audio. Just saying class compliant is not always the answer. This is a tough one as we don't have all the gear to test.

  • The world could always use miRack videos!

  • I haven’t seen enough comprehensive vids that cover all of the new features in Loopy 2.0

  • Omg… how could I forget… a tutorial on how the hell fugue machine rubato works 😆

  • @Squishy Fugue Machine Rubato is very complex. I don't own it but I tested the trial version. It can do a lot but it's like a modular midi automation sequencer from another planet.

@Coloobar I have slowly started diving into Loopy 2.0. I am sure I can do a few videos of what I learn.

@FizzyLizzy27 I will take a look at these and see what I can gleam from them for some video ideas. Thanks.

@robosardine I can do some MIDI stuff.

  • Hey Mitch.. I miss your Nugget of Knowledge ™️ tutorials.. short + quick.. to the point.. always learned a thing or two.. sometimes on more obscure or forgotten apps..

I can see there’s a bunch of good ideas flowing on here already.. I’m always curious of people’s workflows.. how they go about creating something is just as interesting as the thing itself.. one little work path can lead to a whole new outlook on your own workflow.. and that changes with whatever apps and/or hardware are involved..

Glad to see you back my friend.. Will watch with great enthusiasm whatever you decide to share with us..
