Zoom U-44 users- can you help?

Hey all I am a loopy pro newbie – been going deep into this rabbit hole for about a month. I recently purchased a used zoom U 44 interface.

I am having a specific problem and it occurs whether I hook the zoom U 44 up to my iPad via an adapter, ( my intended use case) or into my MacBook Pro to use with Logic (my troubleshooting a/B comparison use case).

In either case, the U44 is recognized by the software as an input source, but it does not pass on any signal: when I play my guitar there is no movement of the input meters, neither in logic nor in loopy pro’s mixer. In fact, neither of the LED indicators on the U44 even light up at all, whether I try my guitar or, via XLR a microphone. I’ve double checked all the settings– confirming that gain is up neither channel on the U44 is muted, side switch is set to interface etc. I’ve also tried all three power options – USB, battery and external power bank, and I have also updated the firmware, just in case. No luck.

Has anyone encountered similar problems with the U44 audio inputs? Or have any ideas?

Grateful for any thoughts this community has. Thanks!

What about output? Can you play something from the iPad or Mac and have it output properly to speakers or headphones plugged into the U44?

Also, in terms of input have you pressed the 'Hi-Z' button to the left of Input 1 for the guitar, or the 'Phantom' switch for the microphone?

Also also, have you tried setting it to Standalone (the right hand setting) rather than audio interface? I can't remember which is the 'correct' setting for iPad.

I have one of these at home, so I can take a look this evening and tell you what position everything's in for me.

  • Thanks - yes, I can in fact hear output from Mac or IPad (like Spotify) through headphones output on the U44. Hi-z is set correctly when I use guitar and I think I tried the other settings you mention, too. Yes, if you can tell me how your switches are set that would be great. Thanks again!

OK! Power is set to USB (the leftmost setting), Operation Mode is set to Audio Interface (also the leftmost setting).

Phones balance is set to the far left.

Direct Monitor is set to the far right.

Plugging my SM58 into Input 2, I speak and can see the Clip Sig indicator light up in green even if the Gain 2 knob is set to a pretty low level.

In Loopy Pro, I can monitor my mic and hear myself speak on Input 2.

  • Thank you so much. This confirms that I likely have a defective unit. I just reached out to the seller. (again) appreciate you taking the time to share your set up!

Ah, I'm sorry to hear that! I hope you can resolve the situation with the seller.
