You give then you take - big 80s synth sounds
Made and mixed fully on Korg Gadget 3 (@jwmmakerofmusic this is what I was working on). Didn't master it because the mix sounds good to me.

Sounds good to me too. Great actually. I really love this, mate.
KG3 still holding up well. Nice work.
I like it a lot. I could only listen to the first half as I was running late this morning. I'll listen again when I get home tonight. These office PC speakers are useless. What I did hear sounded really good. The composition really captures the big synth sound of the 80s. The final mix is well balanced, right and tight, with featured instruments stepping forward at the right time. I think mastering is a concept that is becoming outdated. These new DAWs have incredible power that the old analog consoles didn't have. Each channel can get individual, detailed control that wasn't possible before. Previously, mastering was used to get the best possible sound to reproduce in vinyl. That sounded good at the time, but now everybody enjoys CD quality. I rarely use anything more than a good compressor for the mixdown, usually just to even out spikes that I can't get rid of any other way. I use a lot of sampled material and a lot of it has glitches baked into the sample. I tried 4-5 different mastering apps, but they didn't give me any better results. If it sounds good before mixdown, that's the ticket!
Really nice tune. Reminds me of late 80's Depeche Mode.
Very good, definitely has the 80's sound. Made me think of the movie Escape From New York for some reason.
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you

I appreciate you all listening to it.
I can easily say this is the most purposeful song I’ve ever made. It made me emotional while making it.
I’m going through a tough time as I have lost touch with someone very dear to me recently because of things beyond my control. I don’t know when I’ll be able to see her again. But I have accepted it and have hope. It was like a gift that was given to me but abruptly taken away, hence the title.
The contrast between calmness, joy, melancholy, and anger runs through the song. The intro conveys calmness and beauty that is suddenly broken by the first big synth sound. The call and response of melodies in the chorus, the happy melody first followed immediately with the sad one which is out of key, and the joyful and angry bass lines under them all. The outro sounds like acceptance. All of this is what I feel so it’s purely made for me. If it touches others, well, there is no sense of satisfaction for an artist than communicating their feelings with others.
@Sandstorm, it absolutely does sound like late 80’s early 90s Depeche Mode, a la Violator. I didn’t start with that intent. It’s likely because I spent some of the most emotional times of my life with Depeche Mode as a teenager in the 80s. Simply subconscious.
I read somewhere someone describing Behind the Wheels, as a "dark, European funk tune for those who dance with a touch of sadness.” This falls into the same category.
Maybe I’m being melodramatic. It’s just a simple song after all.
@Paulieworld I couldn’t agree more. I was much more focused on the emotional content that the technical aspects of it which is unusual for me. I know you’ve listened to some of my other songs I’ve posted here over the years (much appreciated!), and I’ve been a tech sound nerd mostly. This was different. More raw.
Maybe I’m being melodramatic. It’s just a simple song after all.
Thanks again for listening and your feedback!
Can you share which Gadgets you used. Most of them also can function as AUv3 instruments in other DAWs.
I’m hoping you are using the AUv3 gadgets because I could use them in AUM or Loopy Pro too.
I dig it.
Thank you @wagdog!
@McD I did it all inside Gadget, 12 tracks.
Great work I enjoyed it very much.
I was an obsessed DM fan from 1981 Speak & Spell until Violator. To my ears they never made a bad song.
Behind the wheel and the whole album Music for the masses was a huge influence on my song writing.
Never let me down......what an anthem!
Would be great to hear any other tracks you have written especially if they sound as good as this one.
Hope you find peace.
@Sandstorm
Man, you and I will get along splendidly! Same taste in music. Never let me down! They made beautiful songs. I agree Violator was their peak. I’ve seem them live 3 times. Last one was the Violator tour.
I remade Behind the wheel, my favorite, with BM3 a few years ago. From scratch by actively listening to it a million times. Picked the closest synth and drum sounds I could find and laid Dave Gahan’s vocals on it.
Unfortunately I lost the BM3 project when I deleted BM3 from my iPad to save space! didn’t think about the projects I had in there. Felt like such an idiot. Very hard way to learn a lesson. Always backup your stuff.
Thank you for your kind words 🙏❤️
P.S. I’m a huge Radiohead fan too. DM and RH are my top 2.
Checkout my YouTube channel and my SoundCloud too. Quality of songs vary. Especially with time. 🙂
EDIT: I’d love to hear your stuff. Maybe a collaboration some day.
Thank you @ecou! Glad you like it.
Just got home and listened in headphones. Mix sounds great. Cool composition. I like those ominous sounding minor chords, and that transition near the middle. I don’t think you will gain anything by mastering this.
Thank you for the feedback @Paulieworld. Yeah the more I messed with it in mastering the less authentic it sounded. My memory is the cassette and then CD quality for electronic music back then. Better leave somethings untouched.
Impossible not to hear your love for DM. It sounds really good. Would be great with vocals, your current emotional state is the perfect bed for lyrics. I am hearing plenty of vocals lines. if interested, I'd more than happy to help😉.
Hope you get better soon. Time is a friend
@jankun You made my day. Absolutely! There is space in there for vocals. The piano sounds can be filled in with vocals. I would love to take you up on your offer. Frankly I’ll be honored. I’ve heard your music. I do have lyrics. Well, they are poems as I write poetry. It’s been a few years since I wrote one. But I have the old ones. Let me pull a few that might fit the mood of the song and see if we can change one into song-worthy lyrics. Give me a couple of days and I will DM you, if you don’t mind. I’d love that!
And thank you for your kind words. Humans like you and music give meaning to our lives in this crazy world.
Great. Take your time. Meanwhile I might give a try with my own words in the coming days, with the external pov of someone who was in a similar position as yours (more than once actually 😉)
Even better!
That was impressive, I must say! I know that song inside out, like all their early work and you nailed it.
Do you know Nothing to fear from a broken frame? One of the most underrated instrumentals ever made. The melody is sublime and believe or not Andy Fletcher used to play the bass line live back in the day so he was way better on keys than people give him credit for. Also check out Oberkorn( it's a small town) the B side to The meaning of love. A strange instrumental with the PPG wave 2 all over it!
I am a fan of Radiohead. I have the Bends & OK computer which are phenomenal. Albums to listen to in a darkened room and let the music take you away somewhere.
Hears a cover I did a few years back, my take on JD love will tear us apart. Hope you like it?
Thank you! It took me a while to bring it together but it was definitely a labor of love. ❤️ 🙏
I hadn’t listened to that for a long time. I had to go back and listen to it again. It’s a great piece. You can hear the influence of Krafwerk and Giorgia Moroder in there. Andy was a great musician. The quiet one. What a loss. RIP
Great piece!
Why am I not surprised? 🙂 Those 2 are their best. OK Computer is a master piece. And listening to Nice dreams always makes me emotional. I also really like In Rainbows.
Great cover! Is that you singing? Nice work!
Let me know if you’re up for some collaboration. I think with our similar taste in music, we can come up with some decent stuff. I’m really not fully proficient with any instrument. I can play some guitar, bass, and keyboard but just enough for small riffs, chords, and melodies for production.
Have you heard of this band from Brooklyn, Nation of Language. They’ve been around since 2016. I recently got introduced to their music by a friend. They are keeping the dream alive. I think you’ll like them.

❤️☮️
Yes that's me singing. Not my best effort but I was trying to capture Ian Curtis style of singing.
Just watched 3 videos of Nation of Language. I had never heard of them before you told me. I really enjoyed the songs, they have a New Order vibe going on I think.
Under the water
I'm not ready for the change
This fractured mind. This one was my favourite on first listen. Really cool song, love the simplistic nature of the song. Very catchy hooks and good vocals. The video was also interesting. I love down to earth docu style videos. Like a snapshot of someones life.
Yeah I would be up for a collab if your interested. Maybe we could do a song and post it on here for the song of the month.
What do you think?
Yeah definitely a New Order sound and great vibes.
Your voice is great!
Sounds good. I can work on something. Do you have any loops or pieces that have been sitting around? It’ll give me some ideas to play around with.
Looking forward to making music together!
Nice track and even nicer it seems to have kicked off some blossoming collaborations 🌸🌼
How did I miss this? Great track and production man!😊🙌
/DMfan🇸🇪
Fantastic track and great sounds! Love that you did all this in Gadget.
@GeoTony @DMfan @peanut_gallery Thank you! I appreciate you listening.
I've been taking a break from reality spending a lot of time out in nature.
@GeoTony Absolutely. Be on the lookout for a great collab with @JanKun.
@Sandstorm Did you see Radiohead's European tour announcement? One of their stops is in London. I've registered for the chance to get tickets for London or Berlin. It's not guaranteed but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
