Trying Out BandCamp

Decided to give BandCamp a go. So I will be migrating some old SoundCloud tracks and posting new material there. Would much appreciate some 'followers' and of course will 'follow' back.

Any tips other BandCamp members have would be most welcome.

And, does anyone know why I can't embed the BandCamp 'Player' here? (Only a link appears.)

Cheers.

  • Bandcamp is primarily for sales rather than streaming. So if you're looking for comments or interaction with listeners, then it isn't the right platform.

The problem with the embed must be a restriction with this forum. I was able to get it to work on another forum.

If I recall correctly, I think @jwmmakerofmusic has had a bit of success on BandCamp. If I got the site wrong, I apologize. Maybe ask him for pointers?

  • As already mentioned, Bandcamp is more a sales platform. If you want a platform to share your tracks other than SoundCloud, what about Youtube?

  • I'm in the same (ish) boat as you - I just use both soundcloud and bandcamp. There isn't really any self-promotion on Bandcamp - sometimes I use reddit - there's a forum page for it there where people post a lot on Bandcamp Fridays.

  • My experience of Bandcamp is that it is a great place to host your music for sale, but if you want people to actually find you and listen to your stuff you want to be also posting on other platforms where people actually search for stuff. The search algorithm in Bandcamp really isn’t very good for the unknown artist.

  • Thanks all for the info - seems I'll keep my SoundCloud accounts, maybe consider going pro.

  • For around 20€ a year you can post as much as you like on al major streaming platforms. I use tunecore but there are enough alternatives. Of course you loose all the connections you had on soundcloud, so it might not be wat you want.

  • What I find Bandcamp great for, as it’s free at basic, is to archive my stuff. If I disappear Bandcamp will still be ther! Haha, not that it matters!

  • I agree with Mike. I use my Bandcamp account for archive purposes. I rarely get any plays there, but it's good to have a backup. I also like the look and feel a little more. It just has a nice, clean presentation. Best thing is the price. Free! I have over 21 hours of material posted there. Whenever I post to SoundCloud, I always post to Bandcamp at the same time. So it's not much extra effort. When I first started, the links worked fine. One day they just stopped working. No explanation. I just gave you a follow to help get things going.

  • Thanks @denx, I'll check out tunecore.

Good point about archive purposes @LinearLineman @Paulieworld (thanks for the follow) - and I agree BandCamp has enough control to get it to look how you want.

Thanks @garden - faircamp looks interesting.
