JWM - The Question Remains (Ambient with a Drone Produced in FL Studio Mobile)

A request by my good friend @Pierre118 . :) As promised, here is some straight up Ambient, and I produced it in FLSM. Just two elements - a very complex drone which was 3xOSC with a lot of effects applied and automated, and a simple random melody which was GMS synth.

Not gonna lie, I'm starting to get the hang of Reverb 2 in FLSM (which lends itself better to Ambient than the first Reverb plugin). I also mastered this in FL Studio Mobile with the usual Leveller, Multiband Compressor, Limiter, and Analyser to ensure the piece hits around -14LuFS.

This took me a short time to make, relative to how long it takes to produce a full piece of EDM/HipHop music, but the results are quite interesting to listen to.

EDIT: Anyways, I hope you all enjoy. :)

This is really great, Jim! Thank you.

I like the ambient drone, it's getting very low at some moments.

One question remains....Do you prefer FLSM above Cubasis 3 for producing ambient music?

    Absolutely mate. :)

Yep. I'm glad I shaped and morphed it as such.

One question remains....Do you prefer FLSM above Cubasis 3 for producing ambient music?

It all depends on what I wish to achieve with Ambient to be honest, but these days I prefer FLSM. I mean, FLSM does not host AUv3 plugins (so, no instruments, effects, or most importantly - MIDI plugins), but what it does come with is more than sufficient to get the results I wish to achieve. And what it doesn't come with, I can simply sample via AUM and dump those melodic oneshots into instances of DW Sampler. 😂

Also, I may have missed something, but I can't for the life of me seem to get Cubasis 3 to automate parameters of external AUv3 plugins. I chalk that up to human error on my end. I can only get CB3 to automate internal plugins, and in my honest opinion, I think I prefer FLSM's internal plugins a lot more.

As I said, Reverb 2 is phenomenal and could nearly rival FabFilter's Pro-R 2 in terms of sound quality. (Of course Pro-R 2 has far more features than you'd ever need in a reverb compared to FLSM's Reverb 2.) The distortion and waveshaper plugins are to die for and really add character to the sound. Plus, Image-Line recently even added a "wow & flutter" effect (which works amazing on pads!)

And, FLSM also has complex flexible audio routing capabilities. I can, for instance, send a signal to an effects bus with a reverb set to 0% dry, 100% wet, and affect the reverb with a waveshaper, distortion, phaser, the tremolo effect (whether to emulate sidechaining like in my 4-on-the-floor tracks, or as a Trance gate, or whatever creative purpose I wish to use it for). FLSM also has excellent audio capabilities, including stretching and changing pitch.

Also, FLSM's internal plugins are excellent enough to master any audio I throw at it. It has a multiband compressor (I use the "crispy" preset) and a really decent limiter. It also has an analyser tool which can measure LuFS levels.

That all being said, Cubasis' main draw as a DAW is the fact it can host AUv3 plugins, including MIDI plugins such as Ioniarics, Fugue Machine Rubato (which I'm still trying to figure out how to use, which unfortunately kills my creativity), Harmony Bloom, etc. It's also where I record and process my vocals (such as removing background noise, using Waves Tune RT as an effect, etc) which I can then dump into the FLSM project itself and mixdown from there.

And, I recently purchased Cubasis 3 for Android (since I currently rock a Samsung S25 Ultra as my "daily driver"). What I like about Cubasis 3 is it's pretty damn simple for me to come up with music ideas almost instantly since the default project setting has an audio track and a MIDI track, the latter having a basic piano sound loaded. (This is how I come up with the foundation of melodies, chords, basslines, etc.) And once I have a music idea marked down, I can export the MIDI to import into FLSM on iPad. Easy peasy.

Bottom line - both apps are great for their own things. Sometimes I start creating right away in FLSM if it's a more sound-design-driven piece, and sometimes I just crack open Cubasis 3 on my Android phone to jot down music ideas on the go. ;)

@jwmmakerofmusic Thanks, I was curious about this. Your choices make sense.

I mostly use hardware instruments, like the Push 3 Standalone with Ableton Live 12 and the TE OP-XY, but I'm getting more interest in using my iPad for making some ambient music. Maybe it's time to focus also on that too, and maybe combine hardware with software.

You are very talented in producing music with software, I'm missing that creativity.

  • This was a piece I really enjoyed! The dark atmosphere and the melodies are superb together.

This is top notch. I can almost see Martin Gore slowly nodding and listening to it, there are som very DM- like elements in there.

Thanks mate. :) I appreciate you as always. I like the fact you use mostly hardware. Oh man, I wish I could afford the OP-XY! That would be an amazing environment for creativity. I just simply can't afford it. 🤣 So I will stick with the iPad for full productions, and my S25 Ultra for jotting down musical ideas.

Thanks mate. :) I really appreciate that so much. If I told you how long this took me to craft from start to finish, you'd be left scratching your head. 🤣

  • @jwmmakerofmusic I think the iPad is very capable of making all kinds of music, it's has been proven by you all the time. You are very comfortable with it, I still have a lot to learn. But listening to your creations(and others of course) is motivating me to use my iPad more in combination with the hardware I use. But I still have a long way to go

If you ever have questions about iPad production, you can always ask me. I'm no expert in hardware however (outside of a brief stint with the OP-1 Field), but can make good music on iPad alone. ❤️

I appreciate this, Jim. I have some questions, and I will contact you via PM the coming weeks.

Excellent sounds good mate. Cheers. 🍻

  • Nice piece. I have just imagined that being used at the end of a TV show in the 1960s where someone discovers a dead body and the credits start to roll!
