Do you like Apple Music recommendations?

I’ve been using Apple Music for a while now, and I’m curious about how others feel about its recommendations. Sometimes it nails my taste and helps me discover new tracks, but other times it feels a bit off. Do you guys actually enjoy the suggestions Apple Music gives, or do you rely more on your own playlists?

Moved to "Other Music Content" for better engagement.

The Other category is hidden from the main feed. It's an out of the way corner reserved for off topic stuff and is less strictly moderated. Most people won't see posts in Other unless they make it a point to visit that category.

I've been on Apple Music for around two months, after a free one month trial, and one of the things that convinced me was the recommendations. They are generally very accurate for my taste, and I've discovered a good bunch of tracks and artist thanks to them.

The "Discover" playlist is my default. Sometimes it can be a bit off, but I've learned that if you tap again on the list it creates a new selection with a slightly different style.

  • I tried it for a few months with whatever that promo you get with a new iPad.

    I was not impressed.

A short time in, I decided I wanted to hear Dr. Dre's "The Chronic". I think I maybe listened to the first half of it and don't recall listening to any other hip-hop prior to it.

    Big mistake.

From that point forward, Apple Music decided it needed to inject hip-hop into every station and playlist. So, I found I frequently had to skip hip-hop songs when they appear out of nowhere.

I also can't recall Apple Music recommending anything "new to me" that I found interesting. Pandora has been the best for me, in this regard.

Finally, I didn't much care for the Apple Music app, but I won't bore you with the details of that.

  • Yeh, I think Pandora does a good job.

    Thanks for your guidance.

  • Using Apple Music now for a couple of years and I still absolutely hate it’s recommendations. The only reason I keep using it is the native support on all my Apple devices (specially multiple HomePods). The moment Spotify will make it‘s way to run natively on the HomePods I will switch.
In the past I used free Spotify and enjoyed it‘s recommendations way better.
To me it feels like Apple Music has a very shallow understanding of the musical taste of it‘s users.

  • It probably gets it right more than it gets it wrong for me, but sometimes makes some terrible suggestions.

  • Apple Music has been hit & miss for me. HST, recently the Discovery playlist won’t work for me at all - I tap it, it fails to load & then immediately goes back to the Music Home section..It’s weird coz all the other radio stations load fine..

..Still, I get to manually select what I listen to now & also discovered (pun unintentional) that u can make a radio station out of any track ur listening to, by clicking on the 3dots & choosing “Create Station” - I’ve been using Apple Music for years & never knew about that!

  • I’ve never found a new song I like through Ape Music recommendations. I always get suggested songs I already know. If I listen to Foo Fighters I know Nirvana exists and don’t need Smells Like Teen Spirit introduced to me.

Spotify on the other hand has brought me multiple favorite new bands. I’d never heard of The Menzingers before Spotify but they showed up on a playlist recommendation once and I’ve listened to every album they’ve released, they’ve been on my top played artists for many years, I’ve learned to play a lot of their songs, and I’ve seen them in concert a few times. I’ve never gotten anything like that from Apple Music.

  • I don’t mind the recommendations, but what REALLY bugs me is the inability to create a playlist unless sync is enabled. I’ve read too many horror stories where people have lost their own music after discontinuing with the Apple Music sub.

You might be onto something there -- monkeys? typewriters? Shakespeare?

By the way, welcome to the OP @Melanie 👋

  • I'm surprised to be the only one finding the recommendations accurate. Maybe it's because 95% of what I listen can be considered to be of the same genre (Downtempo), although most of it is not classified as such by Apple Music.

  • Last week, a band I like released remastered versions of a couple of their albums on their own label. They are already in rotation on Pandora. 👍

You can't even mark a favourite unless sync is enabled. 🙄

  • Never tried Apple Music but I do use Youtube Music and find it great.

Good to know, but I don't trust Google, and they already burnt me when they killed Google Music.

YouTube music is great because you can put videos in song playlists. I’ve got a few live acoustic cuts of songs that end up on playlists that wouldn’t seamlessly work in other streaming services.

My son swears by YouTube Music. He's been on it for years and says it's the only subscription he has no regrets whatsoever about.

Yep, really bad usability. I’ve re-subscribed via the 3 months for 1 offer, and love the quality and range of music on there, but I’ll probably unsubscribe again because of the playlist issue.

  • @oldsynthguy Agreed on quality -- they can stream Dolby when it's available too.

I think I'm going to check out Tidal next.

BTW, the free Amazon Music offering is TERRIBLE. They constantly bombard you with ads at a much higher volume than the music. 😫

I had an email from Amazon a few weeks ago, saying I was now eligible for ad-free music as we have a family Prime account - but when I log in to try it, it just redirects me to a subscription sales page!

Be interesting to hear how you get on with Tidal - same price as Apple, and they let you create a playlist!

They are just trying to upsell you Amazon Music Unlimited. If you are signed in with a Prime account, then you can just close that and use the Amazon Music Prime tier that you have with your subscription membership.

I'll let you know if/when I check out Tidal. I've started purchasing music again, and I already had a lot.

What is the reason why you don’t want to use Apple Music? I started using YouTube Music about two years ago, mainly because it came with the service when I bought YouTube Premium. I thought since it was free, I might as well give it a try. But YouTube Music always mixes music and videos together. Sometimes I just want to listen to music quietly, but the recommendation page is full of videos. This experience feels a bit split.

  • I tried a 3 months trial of Apple Music and went back to Spotify within a week. For whatever reason, Spotify is usually spot on with its suggestions. Apple Music's suggestions are either a hit or a miss for me personally.

Interesting, I don't get any videos on the home page and only see videos when I specifically go to my Youtube playlists. Youtube Music was the first one I ever subbed to and I like it so never felt the need to try anything else.
