Mushroom music...

edited August 2025 in Hardware

Instruo have just released Pocket Scion which they describe as:

"A portable device that captures biofeedback data sourced from contact with living organisms. This data is used by the onboard sound engine to generate evolving soundscapes and a range of MIDI messages."

It's a rather beautiful little box with a touch sensitive pad to control 4 different 'instruments' but also a cable to connect to living organisms like plants or human skin (or mushrooms...!) - the data sourced is used to generate evolving soundscapes. One of the interesting things about it is that it outputs multi channel midi through USB or a TRS cable and can connect to an ipad to drive up to 5 separate instruments (as well as desktops or hardware). It's a bit tricky to describe exactly so I'll leave it to the developer to give a much better overview...👍

  • I was looking at this online last night, it’s cheap too at around £130 ‘

Looks very versatile as a MIDI generator as well as an instrument - should have one arriving later today...

  • I almost bought a Plantwave several years ago, but the reviews weren't great. This iteration looks so much better.

  • I don’t see any mention of compatibility with iOS- am I just missing it?

The app that allows you to have more control over the instrument is desktop only with Windows, Mac and Linux versions. You'd really need the app to get the most out of it (like setting multi channel MIDI so each voice can control a separate external instrument). However the instrument is USB class compliant so wiil be recognised by an iOS device (with the right cable / adaptor). In this video, Modern Biology demos using it with an iPhone (at around 18:12).
