Is Ableton Note catching on? New update with Drift synthesizer
Ableton Note has an update with a new synth.

Is it catching on? I find it to be awkward in terms of how it captures MIDI.
I can never get the hang of it.

My perception is that it's not overly popular with this particular crowd, but it's gaining traction with Ableton users at large, especially those with an Ableton Move. For my money it's great software, and the MIDI capture workflow really clicks for me, but I'm sure it's not for everyone.
The Drift synth engine and presets have shipped with Note for a while, including the ability to use custom Drift presets created in Ableton Live. What this release brings is an IAP for access to all of the control parameters of Drift, so this gives Note real sound design capabilities that it hasn't had in the past.
I think if they implemented a file save format that could be directly opened in the desktop version it would make a huge difference.
Agreed. I don't quite understand the artificial reliance on the very limited Ableton Cloud for that when it could just save to an iCloud folder. Don't know why Ableton wants to get in to cloud services like that.
It would also potentially open the app up to people with older versions of desktop Live. It almost seems like they’re limiting the audience for the app for no good reason.
It is very much about building a closed-ish ecosystem around Note, Move and Live. I'd love to be able to export MIDI from Note, play with it in e.g. LK/AUM before sending it off to Live on desktop, or sending it back to Note. OTOH Note and Move provide an "instant results" experience that really works best in that closed-ish ecosystem.
They might also be calculating that the market of Live users who don't currently do anything on iOS is larger than the market of iOS music makers that might be persuaded to purchase Live, but I don't know.
ETA: I guess that doesn't really address your point, about opening up to older Live versions. I think they don't want to do that since they rely on synth engines and features that first appeared in later versions of the 11.x and the 12.0 version of Live (Drift, Wavetable, Drum Sampler, Auto Filter, etc)
You can already do that using iOS share and save to files - then just double click the .ablbundle file to open in Live.
Really? I thought it required a cloud account to export (or at least it did at one time). I’ll try that later.
Note finally became at least somewhat interesting. I agree with the OP though, the MIDI capture is awkward at best.
Though I know a recent update made MIDI editing easier, so the capture thing may be moot. Deleted this app a while back, may have to download again...
Music Radar says full version is in-app at $3.99.
I’m a massive Live fan, but although I appreciate how good an app Note is, it just doesn’t fit into my iOS workflow at the moment.
The Note instruments are good, but sound-wise they’re never going to rival an AUM jam featuring my Moog, SugarBytes, AudioThing, Klevgrand apps, etc. etc., so for me the iPad is an instrument in its own right, rather than an Ableton sketchpad. I record sessions as audio files, and export them to Live on the laptop.
Saying that though, if Note could act as an Ableton controller as well as a sketchpad, it’d definitely get more use from me.
My posts only show up when I'm signed it??? Shadow banning is awesome!
At any rate, Drift doesn't have Fine Tuning? Can't take a synth seriously that doesn't have Fine Tuning.
I really like the note and I find that what other people perceive as limitations makes it nice and easy to use. A lot of apps are very complex and so I leave them alone because it distracts me from actually making music.
In contrast to the move, which has only four tracks I think you can make a full songs with this app or rather start on the wall and finish it in note
I'm pretty easily impressed, love Ableton. Absolutely h8 note. I can't keep it on my device longer than a few minutes at a time.
It doesn't feel progressive at all- reminds me of Reason's Figure. A half ass attempt to ride off the reputation of an incredible DAW.
I wanted Note to be a bridge between iOS and Ableton Desktop and if it is that- they sure as heck went the long way about getting there, and my legs are too tired for that journey.
Long time Ableton and iOS user and recent Move owner. So I’m probably square in the target audience. Note just doesn’t fit into my workflow. When I’m on the iPad I’ll reach for GR2 rather than Note any day even despite the fact that Note projects go straight into Ableton.
I find note confusing and never use it.
And too minimalistic.
I should erase it from my iphone.
It is undergoing continuous development though, so probably worth giving it some time (that’s my thought on it anyway).
I rolled my eyes at Note when it first came out, seeing it as an underpowered cash grab by a company that had shown no prior interest in iOS/iPad music making. But a couple years later, it is a vastly improved product, with significant new features shipping regularly. They also run an open beta program and are responsive on Discord and through the beta program. I also like the results I get from it, which is after all the bottom line.
I would love to see full-on Ableton Live on iPad, but even if that came about I think there’d still be a place for Note.
One thing I really hope for: Note and Move pretty obviously share a codebase, so it seems natural to have a tight controller integration between the two. It would be a natural way to extend the capabilities of Move while traveling or out and about.
+1 The Move is a surprisingly fun device, to me it feels a lot more musical than a lot of other hardware grooveboxes I have tried. Would love to see it working more tightly with Note and to be able leverage the advantages of a touchscreen.
I really love Ableton Note:

Hmmm. Maybe I should give it a second change then.
I would get in on the beta. As fella mentioned, it's updated all the time- never impressively, but they are doing something and sharing it often enough. I'll see if I can find the TestFlight link
If you have the app, there’s a link to the Testflight in-app.
From the home screen, tap the ellipses in the lower left, select help, and you’ll see a menu item for joining the beta. Note that you should not uninstall note before installing the beta or vice-versa, just install them over each other or you will lose your sessions.
You can use the share function to just airdrop it to your Mac, too. Again, just double-click the file to open in Live.
Note is probably my most used app these days, I find it really quick to use with Capture as the main recording workflow personally. Also a huge fan of cloud sharing, being able to open Note sets directly from Move or P3S is a big time saver over manually sending files to me.
I think I'll give Note a try. I have a Push3SA (I'm just learning it and it's brilliant) and Note seems like a nice way to incorporate my iPad into my flow.
Yeah, I think if you’re already in the Ableton ecosystem and you have an iOS device, there’s no reason not to check it out. Even if it’s just for capturing a quick idea while you’re on the bus or whatever and moving it immediately to Push or Live.
I finally started playing around with Note again a couple weeks ago. When I tried it when it came out, I couldn't get my head round it. But now I'm really enjoying it. It's a smooth workflow. Still getting used to how it all works, with different presses doing different things but it's a lot of fun. Plus I do like capture. I don't use Ableton as this was another DAW I never really gelled with.
I've set it up with AUM so I can use MIDI FX Auv3 and record them directly into Note. Plus you can map out 8 buttons and 8 knobs. Just picked up midi-controller-modz 8 knob controller. Haven't set it up yet, but it's a nice addition to my iPad setup.
Plus with a midi controller (I'm experimenting with the mini 16 SMC pads which is bluetooth and LaunchPad X) - who needs Move!! Feel like I've got the best of both worlds.
Can someone tell me if the sounds in Note match the sound in Move preset to preset?
In my experience, yes. What you get in Note is what you get in Move, and in Live.
