Well I wasnt expecting that ending! I could tell something was coming around the corner though. Nice surprise, and the vocal too. I need to listen to this one again in headphones, I’m sure there’s a lot under the hood to hear.
The play, the interstate sign, the Audio Damage delay? Anyone with a short attention span is going to miss out here as is anyone who doesn’t touch on the apparently blank posting (have seen this on several other forum posts). After playing on SoundCloud, the player appears in the post. Odd. Anyway, another great painting in sound. No lawnmowers though.
Hi @Dav Hope all is well. This started out as something entirely different. A few weeks ago, I came across a series of tutorials by a gentleman doing his masters thesis on dub techno. The depth and detail of his presentation was impressive and I was drawn in. I created 5 or 6 exercises using his techniques. I assembled them into a finished piece and put it away for a week. When I revisited it, I didn't like it as much as I hoped. There was nothing new or different about it. I've heard much better examples of the genre right here on the forum by our own @jwmmakerofmusic and @SevenSystems.
Rather than trash it, I tried to salvage it. I started by taking out all of the drums. Dub techno without drums? That's different. I kept taking out parts until I was somewhat satisfied. I had one last bit of the original and dragged it into place as an afterthought. I thought it sounded unexpected and decided to use it for the ending. This one isn't on my short list, but it got a couple positive reviews on KVR, so I just decided to put it out there. Happy Friday!
Great track! I love dub music, but admittedly know very little about dub techno (or any of the sub genres, I mostly just dabble in the tubby/reggae stuff). Would you mind directing me towards these dub techno thesis tutorials? The end of your track is intriguing in a gnarly way and I would love to further edumacate myself! 🤙
I own and love the AD delay, and I've seen the road sign. I haven't seen the play. I'd like to watch it. However, there is something new on our immediate viewing short list. There is a new Downton Abbey movie coming out next weekend. The funny thing about DA is that we always started watching reluctantly, but ended up loving it. We're hoping the movie is as good as we expect. We always see movies at a local place called Hollywood Boulevard. They serve decent hot food and they have a full bar! We have gotten to know the bartender and he makes our drinks extra special!
I haven't noticed the players not showing up. I'm not really surprised, though. This high tech stuff is getting crazy. Most of the time I feel like an outsider looking in. I like the idea of a "painting in sound". Is there a defined genre for that? Right now I just tag all my stuff as Paulieworld. I would probably get more plays with an established genre. Oh well, I'm having fun, and I get to chat with people like you and others on this forum. Have a great weekend!
I just did a quick search. I'm pretty sure it's this guy.

I never realized that dub techno could be so complex. On the surface, it sounds so simple. I came away with a new respect for artists that create in this genre. Have fun!
Thankya kindly!
Glad you took the time to 'salvage' this one. I would never have guessed this evolved from a dub techno track.
This was a very creative journey indeed, from start to finish. Love the direction you took to come up with your piece. Well done!
@pbelgium @jwmmakerofmusic Thank you, gentlemen. Lately, I feel like I’m running out of new ideas. If my posts sound a bit weird and bizarre, it’s just me trying some new stuff.
I noticed that this one got quite a few views, but not many plays. @AndyHoneybone mentioned that the SoundCloud player was missing. Did you experience that, as well? If anyone else notices that, could you please let me know. Maybe I did something wrong when I posted it. I’ll have to be more careful in the future.
I like "weird and bizarre". Can't wait to hear more of that out of you, Paulie.
I’m on it!
This would have been a good soundtrack for when I visited my brother in Nevada. He lives in a little mining town, Ely. I had to drive 200 + miles down “the loneliest road in America” from Reno to get there. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_50_in_Nevada).
Other Desert Cities is a great complex app. It took me some study to get into it.
We lived in Vegas for a while. We moved out just a few days before 9/11. I remember driving out into the middle of nowhere a few times. The desert is a unique experience. Fortunately, we had plenty of water and gas to get home. We once drove through a corner of Death Valley. I would like to say that it was fun, but I was glad to get the hell out of there.
Other Desert Cities is my favorite delay app, but I have been discovering its other capabilities. It has six unique algorithms that you can play with. They are amazing and can create some fun stuff. I hope to come up with some good things in the future.
I'm writing as I'm listening. The opening sounds majestic.
The delay from Other Desert Cities is also a favorite of mine. I like how you used it.
Like so many of your pieces, this one evolves and moves in unexpected directions. That's one of the things I enjoy most about your music. It defies expectations and definitions. So often music is predictable. Not yours.
You have an amazing talent for making it all come together. And I'm admittedly jealous of your production abilities.
Good stuff Paul.
Hope you and yours are well.

Pro composing
Thanks Mac! I just sent you a message. My production skills are a joke. I’m just a wanker. It’s so easy to be unpredictable. It just comes naturally. Let’s do some more cool stuff together. I have a shitload for you to play with. I just don’t want to post it here. Peace and love, bro.
The original tracks had a lot more going on, but it was just too much. This is probably more like decomposing. I’m in a bit of a creative slump lately, and I’m trying to come up with something new and different. I think I have those two attributes covered. Whether it’s good or not… we’ll see.
Ha ha, decomposing - good one. You shouldn't put your self down for in my ears you are magician, now my ears might not tell you much but still. Keep em coming as they say.
Amazing track!
Thank you! I have been hearing some really great compositions here on the forum lately. I’m glad to be involved!
Great track! frenq
Thank you!
Extremely well put together. Great sonic journey!
It’s ironic that you mentioned “put together”, since it was mostly created by taking it apart! Thanks for listening and the encouraging comment. Much appreciated. Have a nice weekend.
@MadeofWax said everything I wanted to about the track 🙏
The SC player is a known problem but I’m not sure where the responsibility for the fix lies. If you move to another app and then back again it normally re-appears 🤔
