The Vegetable Man / Award winning play with original music
I wrote this play in my senior year at CCNY in 1969. Unbeknownst to me it was submitted to the Dramatists’ Guild NYC and won a playwriting award which included a $1000 cash prize. (Significant dough 50 years ago. Especially to a broke musician!)
Several years later I produced this video, but like so many creative endeavors, it was a failure because of poor audio. Recently I improved the video, audio and added subtitles.
There’s improvisation by me at the beginning and end.
lol, here’s a photo of me with goatee and suede tie accepting the award from Dore Sharey, a playwright and prez of the DG.

The plot is about an escaped criminal who tries to take over the household of a greengrocer. He gets a big surprise! I would describe the script and production as kind of Brechtian, purposely overacted and ridiculously grotesque. Just like my real family!
I guess they liked that kind of shit over at the Dramatists’’ Guild!

It’s great to hear the improvisations and see how mature your technical skills were at a young age.
I confess I was waiting for some improv comedy from you
@McD, I was 29. I may have told you otherwise. Lol @mjcouche no improv yet!
“See the vegetable man in the vegetable van”
You have g h o s t…
I also had an orgasm.
This was an enjoyable watch, thanks for sharing @LinearLineman
Thanks @Squishy. Glad you liked it! It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but if you like theater of the absurd this is it!
Yes your piano score: your familiar style for sure. That old photo of yourself, you look like the cat that ate the canary. I only skipped around the whole show. It's impressive that you were so committed to this artform and the actors are putting their all into the production. I guess it is absurd? I wonder what brought you to this idea. Was it just like jazz for you; just improvising and seeing what pops out? It required a lot of thought and work. This must have encouraged you do go on to other plays? Wondering how that went.
@MrStochastic indeed, theater of the absurd. The actors did work hard for no pay and, sadly, the audio back in 1977 made it worthless for them. Two of the actors have died since. It was half a century ago!
Yes, exactly the same improvisatory style in writing this. lol, with my family as the model! Ironically, I had a sister but I left her out altogether.
I did go on to write several musicals. Fortunately, I was blessed with complete failure rather than half assed success and survived the art form!
