I absolutely believe the dropping of the affiliate program is another contributing factor.
Music journalism (and journalism in general) is hurting. A troublesome trend IMO. As has been mentioned here before, this is a niche of a niche. If publishers aren't getting eyeballs on content, it doesn't last long.
You know all this far better than I, so I defer to you. You didn't mention the pandemic, so I wasn't sure if you were factoring it in.
I’m with you. I’m still happy with my iPhone SE (original Gen) - it only ever gets used as a phone (shock) 🤣 and both my iPads are old enough to have headphone sockets but they are good enough to run the apps I use. I’ll own up to having bought my 1st Mac this year after my self-built PC stopped working last year after one Win10 update too many. I’m having great fun with that (especially with the iPadOS apps which also work on macOS).
When I went to buy the Mac, the youthful salesperson said “I’ve never seen an iPhone that old before” as he took my Apple account details. For some unknown reason that gave me a very happy feeling inside.
I’d dearly love there to be reliable native 2-way digital audio communication between the iPads & Mac. That may boost interest in the iPad music apps too.
@0tolerance4silence Good call. Mobile app prices going up while desktop plugins/apps come down is another reason.
From what I've read, young people prefer iPhones, so it's Apple's market to lose.
I'd also guess that the aging of the population has something to do with it. Many of us here want/wanted to be rock stars, while young people today want to be social media influencers.
I think market saturation is also playing a part, there's only so many users to sell to, if the app isn't selling so well then that is probably driving up prices in hopes that the inevitable sale price will generate sales at the original lower markup..
I think what I'd like most is if beatmaker 4 somehow arrived and literally perfect out the gate.. not holding my breath though.. 😂
And drum machines! Millions of drum machines.
And yet, really, I do so prefer, in general, using my fingers to make music than a mouse. Even on apps that aren't designed for touch screens. The only problem is that so many devs don't do knobs well, so it's hard at times to dial in pitches quickly and accurately. Overall though, ugh, a mouse is not an enjoyable way to interact with a synth, imo.
Planned obsolescence, you can't sell the new shiny thing if the old thing works forever, it's the industry playbook at work..
So many don’t realize what’s out there for iOS music. We need more evangelists. Tutorials are great but we need accessible “I can do this thing with an iPhone” videos for the fresh fish. And we also need more meaningful creations/ live use scenarios being documented and shared. It’s one thing to show off an app capability in your own home. But we need to show real life scenarios. I’m talking about myself here too.
It would appeal to everyone, vets and new blood alike. Look at the threads on here of practical applications. People get excited about it. We need more of that. Examples of recent threads are flo’s pedalboard and Akivilla loopy live setup. Two ends of the spectrum too in terms of accessibility/ learning curve.
If they could drastically cut the latency on the new AirPods I would pick them up in a heartbeat.
Agreed! Videos such as this:

Hi @gregsmith. Do you mind saying how they’re not working properly?
I’m considering an upgrade.
I'm happy with my 15 Pro Max enough to not have interest in an upgrade, even if I had the budget.
The only thing I would like to improve on is the camera. It is superior in some ways to my obsolete full-frame SLR (a Canon 6D) but I still follow the SLR scene for a reason. Fake bokeh is fake.
The AirPod Pros are a ripoff, IMO. I have some from a couple of years ago and can't use them for phone calls because they are unpleasant for people on the other end of the call, picking up every ambient sound in my room. Just terrible. I like how they sound, but there are competitors that are significantly cheaper and on par for typical uses.
The microphones don’t work properly and the detection when I put them in my ears is really flakey. I had to replace one of them with one off eBay which works but has stopped me being able to use find my.
I’ve had them since launch so they’ve had a good innings.
😆
I’m on a 12 Pro and other than battery it seems to be doing all right. I say that, but actually the charging port has been 100% unusable for years now. I’m amazed I’ve used it with literally 0 ports for so long.
Big features I wish I had on newer phones:
• USB-C port - any working port would be huge but especially USB-C
• Apple Intelligence - not a huge loss but I’ve had a few useful features on my iPad
• Bigger screen
• Action button
Same here on my standard 12 - port almost stopped working now. This has happened on every iPhone I’ve had, so looking forward to one with USB-C support, as they seem a bit more hard-wearing.
I’ve had this for about 5 years now though, so can’t really complain.
^this 💯
You started this. What say you?
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-09-10/apple-starts-getting-customers-used-to-the-idea-of-2-000-iphones
'bout time customers started getting Apple used to the idea of people using 10 year old phones.
I’m still on an 11 pro max. Lightning port still works, and the original battery lasts all day.
Of course that’s because I only use it as a phone 99% of the time. I’ll occasionally fire up Drambo and fiddle around with some things for 10 or 20 minutes if I’m waiting for my crew to finish up at night. But that’s it.
It does have a cracked screen though, so I won’t rule out getting a new phone eventually. I’m just not in any kind of hurry.
And my 12.9” iPad Pro M1 w/1TB I’m quite content with for now.
AI is all the rage and Siri hasn't kept up. I guess time will tell if "Apple Intelligence" can catch up to be as well-regarded as its competitors.

Maybe I’m just unlucky then, all my lightning ports have played up since my first 3gs! iPads too.
I can get my phone to charge after tweaking the connection a bit, but it sometimes annoyingly disconnects mid-charge when I’m not watching.
I’ve gone through all the usual checks - cables, dirt etc. I think the port itself just gets looser over time. Sometimes a new cable giving a tighter fit keeps things going. If I was keeping it much longer I’d buy a wireless charger.
The USB-C ports seem a bit tougher, so I’ll make sure the next phone supports those.
The USB-C port is a huge improvement. Worth getting an upgrade for this one feature alone.
Yeah definitely!
Wow that is unlucky- especially since the 3GS didn’t have a lightning port.
Still rockin a iphone 4S here. Can still do SMS and calls. No space for photos and I don't have a data plan. I sleep with earplus in so don't want to stress my canals any more during the day, although the mrs airpods are awesome tech. I have an M1 ipad, when it craps out I'll just get the cheapest base model. Without the headphone jack my iOS use has gone waaaaay down. Good olde days are gone.
This is why I love Maschine. Best of both worlds with knobs, pads, touch strip for tactility and mouse for quick accurate edits. Since the iOS music route is more table/desk bound now anyway I figured why not. One day there will be a mobile touch screen made by a music hardware dev that will be awesome. Looking forward to that.
I've given Apple enough money over my 50+ years. I see nothing over the past decade that has been reason to buy what essentially is an incremental drip and an exponential cost. I do hope Ricky Tinez is doing something otherwise, I will wait until my phone dies before shelling out more cash.
