Best USB-C dock for iPad - need suggestions
Suggestions, yes, but from actual users of the gear, not links to online reviews and lists...I have been through many of those and it just gets confusing as to what to trust, what actually works as advertised what is 100% reliable, etc, etc. Hence I am asking for direct user experience with the units recommended.
Will be using it on an iPad M3.
Must have a cable connection, NOT direct mount to iPad, Power through (prefer 100w but 60 will do) MUST have a quality DAC and corresponding audio port (3.5 is ok as long as it is very good quality)
As to other connectivity, I do not need HDMI, nor Ethernet ports...will probs only need two or three USB high speed ports.
Now I daresay what I am after does not exist, certainly in all my searches I have found devices that have some of what I need but not others, or they have so many ports that they become rather large. This is for taking the iPad on stage primarily and will be used for running AUv3's and software drums from the iPad.

this one has proven to work well in the field. However, I have to follow a procedure of connecting. First the iPad Pro M4, then power, and only then SSD’s. Then there is 10 Gbps for video editing.
MIDI works in any way. No special procedure.

It doesn’t have a headphone output, but I guess this can be done with a USB-headphone thing.
You may be correct about the existence of your perfect solution, but in my experience it’s not as much friction as you’re imagining. I’ll share that I currently use two different solutions depending on my purpose.
I have a “Vangree” 4 in 1 USB Display Hub. It has a metal chassis, 100w thru, and a detachable cable. It is the size of a Hot Wheels. It doesn’t actually have a dedicated display output, but rather one of its USB ports is DisplayPort rated. I’ve used that with an Apple USB-C to 3.5mm for a few months and have yet to encounter an unexpected limitation. I’m quite pleased with mine, but I’ll point out that several comparable devices are now available. I’d recommend a detachable cable, which makes it feel a lot smaller since you don’t have to drag it around with the host.
I also have a Thunderbolt display dock; this is more convenient in some ways, but it is somewhat large. It has a built in audio card, but this is actually somewhat inconvenient to me because it complicates connection of a real audio interface; I think a discrete USB DAC is a better minimal option. The dock also supplies ample independent power for the host and any USB equipment thru a dedicated power brick which may be extended to an unlimited length. A convenient side effect of its nature as a laptop dock with a PSU is that I can momentarily disconnect my phone without disturbing any connected gear, which isn’t true of a normal hub. It holds all of my cables in place, while my 4-in-1 is at their mercy. In fact, it is large enough to serve as a base for my phone with a clamping MagSafe stand attached (with this, I cover the display outputs lol). I suppose it wouldn’t be too hard to imagine it as a foot for the iPad in the same configuration.
I wouldn’t be able to recommend a specific Thunderbolt dock, as mine is out of production. I hope this helps
Im also interested to see experiences from real users. I got one with usb power thru but it just doesn’t work
usb adapters are a wild west with hundreds of products that seem to be rebrands of the same thing with wildly varying prices.
when two USB C devices are connected, a couple of things get established: who is sending power, who is receiving power? What power protocol is supported on both sides? With several USB devices it can get complicated, for example when you have the slowest device attached to the hub first, and the faster devices attached later.
I scored like a 40 dollar ps22
Works great
