The Snow is Dancing - Someone mention Isao Tomita? Part 2: Cheetah MS6 / MOZAIC
While interest in Tomita has been rekindled by @Felsenstein, here’s my version of the title track from Tomita’s 1974 album. This time sequenced in Cubasis on iPad but constrained to a single hardware synth as sound source.
That synth was a Cheetah MS6 - a 1988 UK made 6-voice multi-timbral DCO/analog synthesiser rack module. While multi-timbral, voice allocation was not dynamic - you had to specify how many voices were available per MIDI channel and there was just one mono output jack.
My solution was to write a MOZAIC script that would not only provide a librarian function for the performance memories but, routing through AUM, would also allow the balance control to be modulated by MIDI channel giving the impression of a stereo field.
I’m using a performance patch of one 3 voice and 3 mono channels and converting Program Change commands to swap voice patches through the piece.
The video must rank as one of the most confusing on YouTube. Probably best just to listen unless it’s MOZAIC rather than Tomita that has brought you here 😊

I had not heard the original by Tomita, so this was entirely new for me. Very cool. I enjoyed watching the video of the setup and your captions explaining the processes. I did a lot of Perl scripting in a previous life. I would think it’s somewhat similar. I think I have Mozaic somewhere on my iPad. I might look into it this weekend… after we get back from Downton Abbey.
Peace, bro.
This is high level wizardry, don’t understand what’s going on but the music that you pull out of the hat is pretty good 👌
So kind about the video. I think it could be used for one of those sci-fi movies where someone is getting a lifetime of memories uploaded in a blink of an eye.
I’m sure Mozaic syntax will be very familiar to you. I think it was only ever intended to do relatively simple transformations but it’s fun to see how far you can push it.
Thanks for listening. Always good to hear from you.
Thanks Tony.
It’s a great piece from the Children’s Corner Suite. Debussy dedicated it to his 3 year old daughter. My grandkids more interested in Pokémon.
👍🏻 That piece really sounds made for synths. It sounds like Debussy had an arp. You must really love that Cheetah to go through all that rigmarole. 😎
Haha - I bought the Cheetah over an Oberheim Matrix 1000 because it was multitimbral so felt obliged to use the feature at least once. 😊
Another act of ‘love’ was reverse-engineering the circuit design so I could find and fix a blown logic chip. But that pales in comparison with the efforts of Kristofer Maad who disassembled the firmware and updated the system ROM to add parameter MIDI CC control and portamento.
I could never understand the appeal of Pokémon. It seems rather silly, but kids love it. At the moment, they are our biggest client. We are printing millions of them with no end in sight. It’s interesting to watch the level of security required when we pack it up for delivery. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that there are undercover armed guards watching our every move. They pay on time, so I’m not complaining.
So many unexpected connections on this forum 😀. I need to up my game as I can only remember about 5 Pokémon species and there are over a thousand now. Me pretending I used to be a pirate is starting to wear a bit thin. On the plus side, the 5 year-old knows all the lyrics to the Pokérap and if that’s their introduction to making music then it’s not all bad.
