Gear Issues

I am struggling to get my gear all working together. The issue is trying to charge my iPad mini while connecting my M-Audio Air 192-8 (which must communicate and be be powered by its one USB-C port), my Novation Launchkey 61 MK III as my midi controller, connected and powered by USB-A port, (I also am sending midi via the 5-pin din midi out on the Launchkey to the trs midi in on the M-Audio Air), and my Valeton GP-5. With the use of various USB hubs, I can make everything work if I use the iPad as the usb host. The minute I try to charge the iPad through one of the other ports on the usb hub, it won’t charge the iPad. I’m using the power brick from my MacBook Pro to power the usb hub so there should be enough power available.
Open to suggestions.

  • My I-Pad mini has a usb c port.

  • The hub has to have a PowerDelivery (PD) USB-C port to do the charging.

  • And the iPad must be the USB host, so it can only connect to the host port on the hub. The PD circuit to charge the iPad is only present in the host connection. The other ports on the hub only have conventional 5 VDC USB power to supply other devices. An iPad can only be a USB slave when it's directly connected to a computer port by a cable.

  • So, to be clear, power must be supplied to the hub with the PD port, and that should power/charge the iPad through the host port, if the power supply has sufficient wattage?

Is that correct @uncledave ? I know very little about USB-C.

Tell us more about your hub. Is it a USB-C hub with power delivery (PD).

Exactly. The key is that the PD leads going upstream to the host are not the same as the 5 VDC leads going downstream to power connected devices. Wattage is not really significant unless some high powered peripherals are connected to the hub.
