Original piece inspired by a recent track by @Daveypoo (thanks).

There's something not quite right about this track (other than my strange chord progression and arrangement!). Can you spot it?

  • Wow - I'm flattered. Nice playing as always, sir. While there are many effects that can emulate this and they have their uses, I feel that the classic process brings the best results.

    Well done!

  • Interesting chords. Have no idea what’s off. Something with the pitch?

  • Something going backwards although the transients don’t give it away?

  • Thanks for listening and commenting @Daveypoo @LinearLineman @AndyHoneybone

    Yes, the main guitar is backwards. Done the old fashioned way: recorded the backing track, reversed it, then played the solo and head over the top. Un-reversing, the track plays normally with a backwards guitar over it.

    This was a lot of fun to do and I recommend trying it, but there were some difficulties:

    Need to plan ahead;

    Learning to play things backwards - I made the melody a bit too difficult;

    Improvising solo dynamics backwards is very unnatural - basically starting with high fast runs gradually getting lower and slower;

    Capturing those dreamlike reversed swells and abrupt note endings just right - I did 3 takes and the first 2 didn’t sound backward enough.

    Listening to Castles Made of Sand really helped a lot - Jimi’s phrasing is perfect, he knew exactly what to play to capture the full ‘reverse’ experience.

  • Impressive (and very musical) track given how difficult it must have been to do the backwards lead 👌

  • Agreeing with Tony but also the anxiousness it gives, it's so... like a hole in the stomach -- weird and not very pleasant feeling. Well done! 😃

    Thanks for listening and liking, much appreciated. Took a few goes with some extra practice on the melody. Interesting experiment/experience which I’ll be doing again sometime. I wonder how GeoShred sounds backwards.

    I kinda understand your feeling of anxiety. There’s a note at around 3:30 that just hangs around for a bit then swells and suddenly gone. Also, the chords are quite tense, maybe adding to the mood. Thanks for listening.
