Which is why I bought a second hand iPad Pro 12.9 inch. Last of the iPads to have a headphone socket. Hardly touch my iPad M1 for music making.
Yah was tempted to do something like that and almost got a headphone ipad but just figured why prolong the inevitable... actually still tempted though heh.
I use a iPhone a lot while hiking and backpacking for working on my photography, and despite having some nice camera gear all the photos I’ve ever sold have been taken with an iPhone. So any major improvements to the camera systems make it an instant upgrade for me. Been waiting years for the telephoto to get better, so this is a welcome upgrade for me. According to UPS my iPhone 17 Pro should be here any minute, I’ll report back shortly on it.
IMO the iPhone Pro can be thought of as a high-end camera with a general purpose computer and phone built-in. And in that context the 17 is a nice worthwhile upgrade for the optics and sensor improvements. If photography isn’t your thing, it seems like the base iPhone is a really solid choice this year (and is still a very good camera).
BTW I think I read that all models ship with more RAM this year, so that might be a plus for folks running a DAW with lots of plugins on their phone.
My 3-hour review of the 17 Pro is that it’s a heckin’ chonker but doesn’t really feel noticeably bigger in my hand, maybe because the aluminum frame weighs less than the titanium they’ve been using? I don’t know. The back camera is brilliant. The new front camera is a nice improvement. The flash/light seems brighter with more control on beam width, but that’s a subjective impression. All my previous Magsafe accessories seem to work just fine. The great big camera bump is fine, really. Again, it doesn’t feel noticeably different in my hand.
Now if we could just get it without that pesky phone built-in.
iPod Touch Pro FTW!
Now you made nostalgic of my ipod touch 5. It would be great if apple brought back that line. All the apps and everything, just doesn’t make calls. Who calls anymore, anyway? Just text me
I got my wife new Air Pods. She put her last pair through the laundry, the left ear survived it, the right ear didn't.
I'm still waiting on the iPhone screen I can see when I'm outside. I know that a lot of the folks who work at Apple never go outside, I'd like to remind them about this thing called sunshine.

New “phone” is here and I’ve spent a lot of time putting it through its paces. I also thought the 17 Pro felt more or less the same size as the 16 Pro, despite it being 8 grams heavier. I like the new plateau more than I thought, sits better on a table (I almost never use a case) and gives your finger a nice edge to support the phone with while holding it. The brighter display on the 17 is nice too, 3000nits in the sun makes a huge difference in how easy it is to see things.
One thing that surprised me was the whole heat dissipation aspect of the 17 Pro. I never really had issues with my 16 Pro feeling too hot unless I was max brightness in the sun for awhile on a hot day. However the 17 Pro gets noticeably warmer in hand, at least when doing more complex things like busy Note sessions or photo editing in Lightroom. BUT, unlike the 16 Pro, the display doesn’t dim and the device doesn’t feel like it’s throttling down when it gets warm. It just keeps working like normal, so I guess that vapor chamber is doing its thing.
The new telephoto camera on the 17 Pro is a really nice upgrade over the 16 Pro, so for that alone it was worth it for me. Side by side comparisons were very obvious when it came to seeing more detail. What I didn’t expect was how much their new imaging pipeline affected the wide and ultra wide lenses too. I was disappointed with the ultra wide 48MP upgrade on the 16 Pro, soft in the corners and still not as much detail as I was expecting. This has been greatly improved on the 17 Pro, the ultra wide feels like it captures a lot more detail across the whole frame, Same with the main lens, you can especially see it in shadows and darker images, much more detail.
Oh, and the new battery life increases are AWESOME (at least here in the US with ESIM). Went on a 4 hour mountain bike and photography ride yesterday and the battery only drained 5% with GPS tracking on the whole time and some photo sessions. 16 Pro drained to 88% doing the same, though I admit it could partly be because the 16 Pro is a year older too. Still, as someone who uses their phone for navigation and photos while backpacking a LOT, any increase to battery life is most welcome.
Honestly my only real complaint about the 17 Pro has more to do with iOS26 than anything. All that new Liquid Glass makes dark mode feel a lot brighter everywhere on device. I leave my phones in dark mode 24/7, so that’s something I keep noticing as I use the 17 Pro (and iPad, and MBP, etc).
When I replaced my iPad Pro gen 2 with a iPad Pro M2, I was pretty annoyed with the no headphones port. I also replaced my phone around the same time with a no port too.
After a couple weeks it was no big deal. I bought a usb C single for each of my headphones. They are now a extension of the headphones. I don't think about it.
I’ve got an iPhone 16 Plus so have zero interest in anything from the 17 series, unless there was some free upgrade from my provider.
..and I think AirPods are ugly.
Hahaha. 😂 I can see my S25 Ultra's screen outside in bright sunlight. Score one for Android. (Of course bright sunlight tends to drain the ol' phone battery just a bit quicker.)
That's true, lol.
Happy with my devices. I couldn’t care less what’s new at this point.
I used to get excited about every iPad release until pro gen 4 which is plenty for my needs and the 3.5mm Jack is no longer a thing so…
Happy with XS in my pocket but I don’t use that for music. iPhone 17 now, wow, time flies. 🤣
Personally I’m glad that religious yearly updates are no longer a thing. It was getting ridiculous.
Consumerism at its worst.
I feel you @Gavinski but it was bound to hit the saturation point.
For me app purchases literally plummeted after Drambo and Loopy Pro releases and not for the lack of funds, there just isn’t enough cool stuff out there.
Hopefully AI app programming will take off so people with good ideas won’t be hindered by the lack of coding skills, which may bring some new cool tools. Who knows.
…still, so much can be built in Drambo. I just miss something analogous to Samplr for direct screen playing.
... until your battery dies.
Not sure I understand your comment. Headphone port or not the iPad battery will died eventually.
I mean you can't charge the device while the headphones are plugged in. But I suppose you could be also using a hub? I'm talking about when you have headphones on an adaptor plugged into the USB-C port. Maybe I'm misunderstanding you.
Could also charge through Magic Keyboard with headphones.
haha good advice!
Ok you meant dead as in empty not as in end of life. I have the Apple dongle that does charging, usb A and HDMI. I use that when my battery is empty.

I agree the iOS music app ecosystem is relatively mature now, just like iPhone hardware and iOS software development. It's a good thing, really. There's still plenty of room for improvement in iOS music apps, but it's more about UI than about core functionalities. We need fewer 'yet another fkn analogue synth or lofi plugin' releases and more interfaces that properly take advantage of the touch screen, more cleverly-implemented mpe synths etc
Cue yet another Juno clone, yawn.. I suppose the old boys never get tired of blowing their pensions on the same old guff..
Haha, fair, fair
I know someone with the new AirPods and they love the background noise filtering.
I’ve got the new pros. They’re quite the step up from the original pros I had before. The noise cancelling and transparency modes are really great and music sounds really good.
I will take your advice, seeing as you are a credible and knowledgeable source according to your picture.
😂 don’t judge a book by its cover!
In seriousness have a read of reviews around sound quality as they’re a bit mixed on Reddit. I think some of this has to do with how good a seal you get from the tips. They sound great to my ears.
