Ova Ambient Synthesizer [Released]

Edit: the app has released!

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ova-ambient-synthesizer/id6751897870

Hey all, I'm just about to release my new ambient, physics based synth app, Ova Synth!

The hex pads are input position sensitive and can modulate the voices.

  • Distance to the center modulates the osc level.
  • X-position modulates the stereo panning.
  • Y-position modulates the detuning.
  • Radial angle modulates the waveform.

You can either play with your touch, MIDI MPE, or deploy the bouncing balls.

  • Set the ball count, size, and speed as you’d like.
  • Adjust the hex grid size (bigger and fewer pads or smaller and more pads).
  • Set the key, scale, and octave range of the notes in the grid.
  • BrainBud compatible!

The synth engine has:

  • 10-voice polyphony with a long envelope (10 seconds attack, 30 seconds release) per voice.
  • 10 types of morphing waveforms.
  • An analog modeled ladder filter.
  • A diffusive reverb with size, decay, and depth options.
  • And finally a stereo mixed output.

It’s really fun to play with big pads and long releases, or just leaving it to the slowly moving balls for creating sweet ambient tunes. I’ve been beta testing it for a while, and it's ready for the release. Let me know if you'd like to participate in the beta. Planning to release soon!

  • Been lucky enough to test this and it's pretty interesting...👍

  • @cem_olcay
Looks rad! Always open to help beta. Love the UI by the way. COLORS!

  • great! please make the balls also bounce between the pitch of the notes. that would be amazing!

  • Interesting concept … I would hope the balls can have independent physics i.e. they can all have their own velocity/angle etc settings and perhaps also turbulence/Brownian motion.

  • Interesting in testing this! Will try with MPE in both Osmose and seaboard

  • Looks really interesting @cem_olcay

I’ll wait for the release as my plate is already full of beta

Oh yeah, the hardware mpe test would be great, the invitation sent!
The mod amount knobs (red controls) sets the intensity of the modulation for touch, ball and mpe input btw.

  • I submitted the app to the app store, expecting to release today!

  • Oooooo dope!

Now I've got two refresh sessions happening in tandem whilst we wait for The Big Red Delicious' discerning eye, probing and prodding the new wares with a stick

  • Nice app. Really enjoying it. Any change has an immediate effect and it’s great that things can be modulated via AUv3 parameters as well. Last but not least another @cem_olcay app that still runs on iOS 12. Thanks for that!

    @cem_olcay This is very lovely!

Have you considered adding midi out also, so the balls could be used to trigger other synths? That would be amazing!

  • @cem_olcay just spotted a bug: in AUM, whenever I close the plugin window, balls stop moving through the grid and notes get stuck. When I reopen the window, everything starts moving and playing again.

    Yeah, I get that too...

Also, @cem_olcay, resizing the window doesn't work correctly, I can't get the grid and output dials to show up no matter how I resize the window in AUM, most of the time I don't get the chance dial either...

  • I lit up when I saw this! Out now!

Feel's a bit premature with simple errors like midi learn not working and no movement when closed(!), i.e in Aum. But the real issue for me is the sound that comes out of it because I don't like it very much, it's squelchy and squeaky and fucking loud (I had to set volume down to -20) and I can't see more than max one possible project and then it's of no use, as it is now. The idea is fun (so is his BounceBud) and if, like one of the cats say above: get midi out. Yeah, that might make me keep it.

A synth can go loud or not depending on YOUR knob controlling, right? Like ANY synth

WHAT IS SQUELCHY AND SQUEAKY MEAN AND I LOVE IT ❤️👑

  • I'm really enjoying playing with this- all of Cem's stuff is fun.

I like being able to tame the grid, lots of control. I'll make a video showing some neat things you can do with her. Neat icon too. Thx @cem_olcay

  • Playing with it now. It’s BRILLIANT!

    Dude! No need for screaming.🙉
How can you love something when you don't know it's meaning?
Anyway, it's pretty typical (humans, not you in particular) to reply to the only somewhat negative comment and ignore the rest of the lot. Moving on.

What! It was a negative comment? 😄

The physics engine (Apple SpriteKit) stops working (pausing) when you background the host app. However it’s not stopping when you background the plugin (closing the plugin window, moving etc in AUM).

  • I like it
Remembers me a bit of Prism
    but With more controls

  • To me it kinda sounds like a self-playing Mononoke. Since it’s ambient we are making here, I’d suggest pairing Ova with heavy FX, like rhythmic gates, delays or looooooooooooong reverbs.

Well it does for me...as soon as I close the plugin whatever note was playing just hangs...

For me as well as I already stated, so that's 3 of us.
