JWM - Bosendorfer in the Machine (Dark Ambient produced in FLSM)(Includes Zipped Project File)

Today's musical offering is a piece of Dark Ambient I produced 100% in FL Studio Mobile on iPad. I have a friend, @pierre118 , who's interested in tips and tricks to produce Ambient.

So, first things first, the biggest takeaway from producing Ambient is to keep things rather simple when first starting out. I'd say stick to 2-3 sound sources at maximum and judiciously automate certain things.

In the case of this track, I used FLSM's Minisynth for the drone so I could get a nice crunchy sound out of its "saw+square" oscillator. I also used a few distortions on it.

Then I used an effects send for the reverbs (the first being set to 100% wet, 0% dry, and the second coming after a waveshaper and a distortion module and before the EQ and pumping effect).

The last track is a DW Sampler sound called "Bosendorfer", the piano sound which has a nice shimmering sound to it.

For those who own FLSM, here's the project zip you can look at to understand better how it was all put together.

Anyways, cheers and enjoy. :)

  • Far out, man! That distorted saw/square oscillator is lovely in the dirtiest way. Reminds me of the electricity sound from Twin Peaks season 3. Was waiting for the fireman to speak the whole track haha. Nice to see ya dip back into ambient, and solely with fruity loops, no less! Impressive! 🤙

I fucking LOVE Twin Peaks! Been years since I last saw the series, but definitely is one of David Lynch's masterpieces. And, yes, David Lynch is one of my major inspirations for experimenting and Ambient music.

I'm glad to dip back into Ambient again. FLSM is quite the versatile DAW once you get the hang of it. It may not host AUv3 plugins, but its two reverbs are definitely more than adequate to get the job done (aside from its many other great internal effects). Plus, FLSM has effects tracks where you can route audio to more than one track at a time. This is perfect for having a "universal" reverb for all the elements and affecting the reverb(s) in creative ways like I did. (I added a "sidechain pumping" effect on the reverb send to add a little extra movement.)

FLSM also has a shitload of IAPs, most of them presets for DW Sampler. There aren't that many instruments not covered by DW Sampler's vast banks of sounds. Then again, if I need a very specific sound, I use AUM. For instance, if I want Mellotron strings, I load something like Korg Module Pro or Beathawk and dip into the Mellotron IAP, sample a long one-shot, and pop it into a project folder under "My Samples" to load into DW Sampler. Job done. And if I want to add some flavour, I could run said Mellotron String patch through something like SuperVHS to give it some grit.

Anyways, back to those reverbs. Another cool thing about FLSM's reverbs is they have a mod section where you can automate mod amount and mod speed for adding even more chaos and timbral interest and sonic evolution. Speaking of automation, FLSM uses automation clips. So it's rather trivial to repeat automation and see it all laid out on the timeline as you see in the screenshot above. And the big trick is to have automation clips repeat at varying bar lengths so that the sound evolves in rather unpredictable ways.

And finally, I swear, FLSM's Minisynth is horribly underrated! 😬 It's sad, really. Sure, it's about as simple of a synth as they come where the other synths (including 3xOSC) are more versatile, but the beauty is in how Minisynth is used. It's got a lot of great timbral features that the other synths don't have, really. As you already remarked, the saw/square oscillator is lovely in the dirtiest way imaginable. ❤️

  • Anyways everyone, the best Youtube channel out there for me personally for getting a grip on Ambient is S1gns of L1fe! This dude is an endless inspiration for me as he shows his process in how he makes Ambient.

@jwmmakerofmusic Thank you so much for this, it's very helpful. And it sounds great.

btw.....I cancelled the refund of FLSM, will try it again with your project.

“This is the water, and this is the well…”

All this piqued my interest so I watched a couple FLSM vids. There was one were Doug was using the dw sampler to basically make his own instruments out of any sound. Pretty rad! FLSM is now on my radar haha

That's excellent news! :) The key to learning anything is patience, so hopefully you have the patience to dig through the app and through my project. Next project will focus on using sounds already built into FLSM without IAPs. I...just gotta make sure I see which sounds are IAPs first so to avoid using them. 😅

That's great to hear. :) I swear, FLSM is such an underrated app, but then in a way it's like a secret gem. Best of all, it's truly cross-platform, so you can use it on Android and iOS and on desktop (PC and Mac, not sure of Linux) and swap projects between the platforms.

Right on! Currently don’t have a desktop but will keep that in mind. FLS was my first daw in the late 90s/early 00s (with cooleditpro, the wombo combo!) and man has it come a long way since then judging by the vids I saw (ghe automation clips is really neat). Look forward to more of your tracks to see what it’s capable of these days

    All of them, lol. 😂

  • Really enjoyed this. Especially with Twin Peaks in mind. My first David Lynch experience was Eraserhead. I started something based on The Lady In The Radiator (In heaven everything is fine), but put it away three years ago. I might just resurrect it.

Eraserhead was my first experience with David Lynch. Somehow, I saw it as a toddler, and it used to give me nightmares until I saw it again in my twenties. It explains a lot as to why I'm drawn to the strange, unusual, and surreal. I want to hear your project. Dust it off, do like Sub-Zero and finish it. 😂
