iPad Audio Routing, HDMI vs Audio Interface, Round One, Fight!

edited September 2025 in Hardware

I'm a few steps away from testing streaming (all components acquired... I think)

And I'm well aware of ios's inability to host more than one audio interface

But since I'm at work, I can't test --

iPad > USBC Hub w/HDMI out > Capture Card > PC

Will plugging in an audio interface into the hub disrupt audio across HDMI? Or maybe (worse possibility) entirely, video included?

[If an audio-only issue, I have a workaround half-ass planned, and that's precisely what my extra ADHD brain space is computing at work tonight]

Thanks for the continued insights and advice, you brilliant bastards, you ❤️❤️

  • Just to clarify: You want to connect your iPad via HDMI adapter to a HDMI splitter (hub). One output of the splitter goes to the HDMI capture device that connects to the PC. And you ask if connecting an HDMI audio extractor (audio interface) to one of the other splitter outputs would cause trouble?
If that’s the setup, then you won’t run into trouble as it will appear to the iPad as one interface.

Sorry USB Hub with HDMI out. My apologies for vagueness (editing initial post)

  • Finally got to sit down and test things. Yeah, the HDMI audio and and the interface audio do start fighting like a fiend lol

Messed with multiroute audio a bit and could get audio thru both but ONLY for monitoring, not for anything recoded on loopy (headphones thru interface got em)

I have an idea of adding an audio interface to the PC (along side HDMI adapter), then splitting the headphone from iPad interface, one for IEMs, one to the audio in of the PC interface

Oooor, I'll set up a camera over shoulder and just audio out between two interfaces and fk the direct iPad display stream 😉

Possibly more next weekend when I have a night to troubleshoot this b!

Any word if any future os updates will allows for better audio routing/multiple interfaces/etc?

  • Under iPadOS26 you can at least independently choose (using the control center) the input and output devices when multiple devices are connected.

Oh dope! That's at least a step closer!
