Smarter Humanize script for Logic Pro - including iPad

This is an interesting script for Logic Pro that provides an impressive range of humanisation of both velocity and timing. Unlike Logic’s standard humanisation, that is random, this script recognises that human playing is actually more like “organised chaos”, where things like the downbeat may be closer to time than other beats.

While the fact that it only allows for delay, due to the challenges of looking ahead in a script, might initially seem limiting - it can actually cater for when you might want a snare or other element to occur before the beat by utilising a negative offset in Logic’s region offsets.

It is available for $4.99 from https://www.positivepressureaudio.com/smarterhumanize

Like other scripts, it requires Logic on a Mac to create a project to load onto the iPad, and then can be saved as a user preset in Scripter.

  • I don’t own LP but this looks cool

Thanks @zzrwood! 😊 I actually wrote that script.

For anyone who’s picked it up, I’ve just released SmarterHUMANIZE 2.0 — with a bunch of new features, including a much improved “negative delay” system so notes can be both delayed and moved earlier with ease.

I’ve also launched a free version, SmarterHUMANIZE Lite, which keeps the essential timing tools (delay + randomization) powered by a custom algorithm under the hood.
You can grab it here: www.positivepressureaudio.com

Any Logic users with questions — happy to help!

You may have given me a reason to open my MacBook. All I need is something that keeps me busy and teaches me something new.

It looks like an idea that might be fun to implement in Mozaic for the IOS crowd too. I think there are some advertised as adding humanization.

I like your user interface to dial in the right amounts of delay and inter-note spacing. Something I’m currently wrestling with in a “random ratchet” script that needs that inter-note attention to sound right.

  • Thanks @McD , SmarterHUMANIZE is a labor of love  Did you mean that I should make a version of it for Mozaic? I didn't know much about it but I just looked at it and it looks very cool!

Is your ratchet script for Logic Scripter or Mozaic?

It is cool but (for a pro) there’s no control over the script. To use your script you have to share the source.
Check out the manual attachment for details I suppose you could ask for money but any customers could
    freely share your solution.

  • Ah, I see. If I have time I'll take a look! Thanks, and let me know if you have any questions about SmarterHUMANIZE : )

  • @PositivePressure : Looks great Dave and thanks for your work here . As I’m iPad only , I wish there was a way to load it into my Logic Pro4 iPad without needing an actual Mac.

  • Good for folks who don't have the time or interest in looking into the tools in Logic Pro for themselves, I suppose. And a nice UI is helpful.

Hey @Telstar5! There is actually a way to do it, though Apple doesn't really make it seamless. If you tell me which version of SmarterHUMANIZE you've downloaded (or will download) in an email to the contact email at www.positivepresssureaudio.com I can send you a Logic session that has the script loaded in it. From there you can open that session on your iPad, then save SmarterHUMANIZE as a preset to use in other iPad sessions

    Just let me know. Thanks!

Thanks @NeuM! Yeah, the piano roll humanize in Logic is very clunky. I designed this script to be more powerful, and hopefully make more sense. And if people really want an easy solution SmarterHUMANIZE lite only has two sliders to make your MIDI feel more human

But there is no way to do what SmarterHUMANIZE does in Logic Pro for iPad, is there?

Do you mean, no way to do it without getting a copy of SmarterHUMANIZE, or no way to use SmarterHUMANIZE on an iPad?

Definitely no way to do what SmarterHUMANIZE does without either purchasing 2.0 or downloading the lite version (for a more stripped down version of the features). Logic's native humanize isn't very smart, and has no awareness of where a note is in the bar, so it just applies a generic randomness that sounds messy, to me. That's why I built SmarterHUMANIZE, to create something to help musicians with a more "musical" sounding humanization.

As far as using the Scripter on Logic for iPad, it is possible, though it's not quite as straightforward as using Logic on a computer.

Let me know if that answers your question!

Awesome, they're both great, but I'll tell you the differences:

SmarterHUMANIZE 2.0 is the full featured script, and has detailed control over every beat and subdivision for timing and velocity, along with advanced features like choosing an input velocity mode, mono synth mode, multiple time signatures, global processing, and negative delay. It's only $7.99

SmarterHUMANIZE lite has the core timing logic behind the hood, but it simplifies everything into a really minimal user interface with just a delay amount and a randomization amount slider. None of the advanced features, but it's free

If you want a lot of control definitely go with SmarterHUMANIZE 2.0. If you just want a taste of the beat-based humanization algorithm then go for SmarterHUMANIZE lite.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks, @PositivePressure ,will do in short order..

  • How are folks importing or opening the script in Logic Pro for iPad? The only way I’ve been able to get new scripts into Scripter on my iPad is to open a Logic Pro project with the Scripter module and script setup in it, and then saving it out from there to get it into other projects on iPad. I don’t have a Mac myself.

I like how this script adds more natural feel to both timing and velocity. I’ve used it on desktop and iPad, and the results sound way more alive.

Thanks so much @Kmivckttr !!! It means a lot to me to hear it's helping other musicians out!

Sadly, the way Apple has designed the Logic iPad app, the only way to open Scripter scripts is to do what you said, open an existing Logic session. I didn't foresee the use case of Logic users that had an iPad but I've now seen it a lot so I think I'll push out an update that has a pre-built Logic session just for only iPad users. I have one that I've sent out to other iPad only users. Just reach out to me through the "contact" part at https://www.positivepressureaudio.com and let me know your order number and I can send you a link. SmarterHUMANIZE lite is free to try, so if you want to take the lite version for a spin first, just download that and let me know you need an iPad friendly Logic session

Thanks again for the interest and hope it helps your music feel more natural!

@PositivePressure - Thanks! ☺️ There may be fewer Logic users in iPad, but the ones I’ve come across are very passionate about their work!
