Props on Matt Berry but that thing is meh.
I finally cut through the noise and ordered mine during the last early access 🙏 I was shocked that it didn’t sell out in seconds life before. I assume the 3rd wave was not broadcasted as much.
The 3rd batch probably had a lot more units available. The 1st batch was tiny, the second was bigger but still a small number. How many units were available in the 3rd batch? Gotta say, artificial scarcity as a marketing tool always leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Even though in this case they managed to kind of disguise that as 'we'll get feedback on early releases to make later firmware better'. Ultimately, I think, such strategies are designed to manipulate through hype and fomo.
I totally agree with you. It was marketing manipulation to some degree. They created a “supply in demand” scenario. The prices people were reselling Orchid for on EBay was crazy! I wanted one from day one, but I was never “fast” enough to buy one “until now”. I see it being a workhorse in my setup, but it’s not for everyone. On October 10th Orchid will be available to everyone and a companion/standalone app called Pistil will be offered. Pistil will allow users to edit the synth engines and create patches to send to Orchid.
Side note: I hope Novation or Arturia update the firmware on their controllers to allow chord creation the same way Orchid does 🙏 it does seem complicated.
well-
some1 will code smth like this on iPad...;)
no doubt...
I took this advert as a geeky comedy sketch nyways:)
loving Matt and Jemaine.
I don't care about the Orchid, but will watch literally anything Matt Berry is in
They already did code something like this. That app Chordi was inspired by Orchid. But yeah, not AUv3:

thanks Gav for Chordi!
hope auv3 smth like this soon.
Did you miss that one? It's good isn't it, especially for free!
If you like Drambo, I made a midi rack that kind of works the same way (pick root, pick basic triad, add Intervals), and can be controlled with a keyboard. You can find it here:
https://patchstorage.com/real-fake-flowers/
for some reason (too many apps) I have it installed on iPad
but never tried it:(
it's really really good indeed, thank you!
its just missing the auv3 version...
also thnx

This one is great, especially on a big iPad screen.
Is it better than chordbot or the same?
Different. Chordbot has more chords. Orchid has a novel way of triggering chords.
This is the problem - people buying based on this lovely ad have been largely sold on this by the marketing. That's a fab little chord progression that develops, it's a nice synth sound and a great Tame Impala track. Not to mention all the lovely videography, and the narrator's voice. And the look of the unit. And the fact it's made by Kevin Parker. All disguising the fact that a) having this machine isn't going to make you Kevin Parker b) there are a hell of a lot of ways to come up with nice arpeggiated synth lines, even if you don't have the theory or the technique, especially if you have an iPad, and even with free apps. Not to say that this is not a nice or a desirable machine. It is. But you get my point I hope!
I sure do! Sold based on “Coolness” factor.
That's a genuinely fantastic marketing video. One of the best that's ever been made for a bit of hardware, I'd say.
I don't follow hardware much, but it is a great bit of marketing for sure, and Stuntman Mike's purchase is the proof 😂😂. At least the price is a lot more sensible than most of the Teenage Engineering stuff, I'll give them that!
🤣
Chordbot has gotta be in the top 5 most frustrating apps in the sense that what it does is great, but what it doesn’t do makes it almost worthless…
1) no midi out except for an export option
2) And this is just fucking bafflingly stupid… There’s literally no place where it shows you the damn notes that make up the chord!!! Wonderful, it lets be build an Am7(5b) but won’t tell me the notes!!??
3) no option for Roman numerals in the chords… It’s just stuck with the idea of a key vs. chord number…
Basically Chordbot is a tool for learning music theory that is most useful for people that already know music theory…
Originally I thought @Meek3 was referring to a hardware device 🫣

New article about how Kevin Parker came up with Orchid: https://musictech.com/features/interviews/telepathic-instruments-orchid/
That looks like a nice device.
A bit expensive though.
New video:
Is this like a Roland J-6
Except that it isn’t; it’s the same video I posted last week to begin this thread.
It’s not exactly, they added to it around 9:40, it shows Pistil during the second half 🙏
Similar and different, you can chord shapes with the extension keys.
