iPad as a step sequencer to hardware

I'm trying to one day be able to use my iPad as a step sequencer with my hardware gear. I have tried using some of my sequencers like MIDI Step or Thesys and even inside AUM, but there is too much delay or latency. I am using an Arturia USB / midi interface. Is there anyway to get it tight as a real hardware sequencer like the Arturia Beatstep, etc? Thx

  • I have a minilab and I don’t feel any noticeable latency anywhere. I should mention i use it mostly with drambo standalone and not many AU plugins. Is there a specific plugin you use that shows this latency?

I am often using both of my iPads (9th generation / iOS 26 and Air 2 / iOS 12) as sequencers for a whole bunch of hardware and it works well so far. The apps I am mostly using are LoopyPro, Drambo and AUM with various plugins. All work fine.

I did have problems in the following two situations:

    • I did once have problems with latency and dropped or stuck notes with some cheaper USB / MIDI interfaces. It turned out these devices had problems with handling MIDI clock and other messages at the same time. Switching off clock solved the problem in the short run - replacing the cheap adapter cables with CME interfaces really solved it.

    • Another time MIDI started playing up again with stuck notes and latency. It turned out to be a faulty power supply on one of my synthesizers. Putting a voltmeter between the barrel (ground) of the 12V cable coming form that PSU and real ground (earth connector, radiator etc...) showed 70V AC - and you could feel it. Once the PSU was replaced with a good one from MyVolts, the problem was gone and no electrocuted synthesists or fried Arturia KeySteps had to be reported.

  • Thanks, everyone! I will try midi out with just Drambo. I was noticing it the most with AU plugins inside of say AUM and running it to my DAW (Ableton). I have in this case, an iConnectivity 4C. I will try some other setups.

Your audio buffer size will have an effect on this. The default may be too large for your needs.
