Best way to boost velocity on an incoming MIDI source?

I've got a Yamaha P71 digital piano, and when playing it into the iPad over USB to MIDI, the velocity levels sent are quite low, even when the keys are struck really hard. Any tips on the best way to crank up the velocity of the MIDI before it gets to an AUv3 instrument? I typically use AUM for this since it's so easy to set up and go.

  • Doesn’t it have a way to tweak the velocity curve in settings? There’s several ways you can go about this elsewhere but that’s where I would look first

Good question. Yes there’s a velocity response curve with different profiles but I like the range I get with the current settings - not too soft at the soft touch end but with some dynamics that I can control. I’ll certainly revisit that if modifying the MIDI gets too tricky.

  • MIDI curve should work but a second option would be a mozaic script or if you want to go full hog Mela has all the midi tools you could need for general manipulation of midi as well as being a synth monster

  • What host/DAW are you using? Logic Pro has a "Modifier" MIDI plugin that can do this.

  • Thanks all - I have MIDI curve, so I'll try that first.

@unlink - I'm just loading up a piano AUv3 in AUM. I totally forgot about the Modifier in Logic Pro - I will check that out too.

  • Update - I've tried out all of the suggestions and they work well. I found one more option which is KQ MIDI Modulate from Ryouta Kira. It works great too. For anyone interested in an application that allows modifying MIDI in all sorts of ways, I highly recommend checking it out:

Oh man. I've tried that one. I'm sure it's great but it hurts my brain so much. 😂
