Re-record multiple times

I have a burning question.

This is what I want to do;
Hit record, play the loop multiple times, stop when I’m happy, keep the last full pass.

This is what overdub does, it honers the loop length and just keeps recording on top but it keeps the previous audio, I want to do the same thing but without keeping the previous audio.

I just want to be able to play a loop untill it's perfect and then punch out and have the last take.

Anyone knows how to do this??

Much appreciated in advance!!

May I suggest trying retrospective recording? Rather than hitting record first, just start the transport and play until you get the take you want, then use retrospective record to dump that last buffer to the loop.

There are many ways to go about that, but here's what I do:

    • My global clip settings have a swipe-left gesture set to retrospective record.
    • I set the master clock to the number of bars I want for the loop
    • Watching the clock progress, I play until I get a good take.
    • Then I swipe-left on the loop and that take is saved there.

There isn’t currently a mechanism for that.

There are a few ways to get a similar result. One is to use retrospective recording and only “record” when you played a keeper as @wim mentioned.

Another method is to automatically record into different clips that are set not play after recording or to record into a clip and on each pass , the previous pass is copied to an empty clip.

You could set up widgets and follow actions to automate it. I could set up a demonstration in a few days.

  • Another option is a clip set up with follow actions and a widget that essentially keeps recording and erasing itself. Stop when you get a take you like. You can use undo to get earlier takes.

  • Another way might be to alternate between two loops. Record to one, then to the next. If an action is added to clear each loop before recording, you end up with the last two takes when you take an action to stop recording. At least I think that would work. 🤔

    Retrospective is way simpler though.

  • Thanks so much for the tips! @wim and @espiegel123.

I am going to try retrospective recording (I have seen it in the menu but haven't tried it yet)

@espiegel123 the solution with a widget that keeps recording and erasing sounds interesting too. I am going to try and figure out how to do that!

I will report back! Thanks again so much for the tips!
