The Oct 2025 One-Hour Music Creation Challenge
Man, it's been a while since I last posted one of these community challenge. For this month's challenge, I want you to attempt making a track from start to finish in an hour or less! That's literally the challenge.
Any workflow that suits you best is acceptable. iOS preferred, but it's also acceptable to use desktop software, a DAWless hardware setup such as a Eurorack or OP-XY or whatever you're most comfortable using, or a combination of any of these methods. And any genre is welcome.
Note, for this challenge, a decent job mixdown is encouraged but not necessary if crunched for timr. Nor is a polished master if crunched for time. Just use an audio editor/Audioshare to normalise the audio file.
Post the finished results somewhere online and link it in this thread. Once you post it online, if you ran out of time to mix/master initially, you can always go back and polish things up.
The point of this challenge is to stir up some creativity.
Good luck, friends!
(As far as I go, I'm going to start producing my track at the top of the hour and finish by the next hour. Figured that's easier than using a timer.)

How about: No premade sample clips? No loops? This way, you're required to play a real instrument, or enter notes on a piano scroll, or play a real keyboard? Could make it more challenging, but that's the point, right?
This is GREAT idea. Definitely will participate !!
I have suggestion how to improve this one .. just record entire process as video and publish it on YT - so everybody can acually see entire process and learn from it .. that would be HUGE benefir for everybody in community ..
i think both on-screen recording and recoring using another device as camera (especially if you use differnt gear than just iPad) should do the job .. What do you think @jwmmakerofmusic ?
@NeuM Sounds like a good challenge for a future community music challenge.
@dendy If you and others wish to video record or even stream the entire process, I say go for it! But for this time, I think that could be a bit much to actually require it. However, if you want to do that, I can't wait then to see the video on your Youtube channel. ❤️
@jwmmakerofmusic nice, Count me in, I think, I'll try screencapturing the whole process, too.
i’m in, decided to go with Dirtywave M8 , built-in synths only (no samples) 🤝
@tyslothrop1 @dendy Can't wait to hear your tracks.
I'm going to start mine in exactly 1 minute (830am here where I live). I'm going to use Auxy for mine, lol. (No big surprise. It's basically my "cheat code" for getting music done quickly.)
This reminds me of Korg Gadget on Nintendo Switch. It has a mode where you can choose a time limit on making the song - I think anywhere from 1 minute to an hour.
Now it's 930am where I live, exactly one hour after I began the track, and I have a finished track all before breakfast! 😂
Here's how I did it. I first created the loop for the main drop, and the loop for the build up section. I made sure the levels and such were where I wanted them. Then I structured it out. I didn't have much time to listen back to much of what I was doing when structuring the arrangement. It was more like relying on "blind technique"/"muscle memory"/"knee-jerk (re)actions" if that makes sense.
And of course I didn't step really all that far out of my comfort zone and went back to my Trance roots. 🤣 @lenberg is probably someday gonna recognise me as an Auxy Studio power user.
Sounds like a fun challenge. Probably not for me, though. I love to sit outside for hours playing with my iPad. I’ll check in later to see what sort of results you got.
You should definitely join up, my friend.
Shake up the ol' music making routine.
Fun challenge! Here’s mine for tonight. Tried to make something complete in 1 hour but didn’t quite make it. Didn’t get to put a solo over it. Here is what came at the 1 hour mark.
This is a bluesy kind beat that repeats over and over. Kind of imitated a song I heard a few weeks ago that had an interesting ‘dual beat”’ feel like this. Was going to put a flugel solo over this but time ran out. Made a beathawk & jazz drummer pattern, and played a pianoteq piano over it. recorded in AUM.
@jwmmakerofmusic & @Dav both Fantastic great challenge too
Love the spirit here!
Btw. do you prefer the new stop buttons over the ole "tap a loop to stop it" behavior? We are thinking about going back to how it was before.
ha.. tried record one yesterday but after 40 minutes turned it off and deleted everything .. i was just not int good inspiration, music was worth shit ..
@Dav I really love it. Even if no time for a flugel solo, the music is still great!
@Drrabbitfoot Thank you so kindly mate. ❤️ I hope you join us.
@lenberg Thanks mate. I've gotten used to the current stop loop behaviour and find it more intuitive.
What I would like brought back is the ability to search by packs, not just by instruments. We could have both.
(The reason for "search by packs" is to do with inspiration. Sometimes I get better inspired if I pick a sound out from a pack rather than from an instrument category.)
Cheers mate.
@dendy Try again, my friend.
If something doesn't work out, it's fine to scrap it and start fresh. ❤️
Thanks for your input! We're leaning towards changing it back though, since that's what most people seem to prefer. Maybe it's not a big deal for you?
I can adapt.
Please post another version with the fluegelhorn solo which I believe is an actual flugelhorn. I can’t get enough fluegelhorn since discovering Freddie Hubbard in the 70’s.
i started one and two hours in realized i lost track of time heh, may do something with it for another thread
Lol. Well, hopefully we'll hear the end result in a separate thread.
I'd love to hear what you did.
This sounds like a fun one...I'm in!
I tried this and failed spectacularly.
So here are a few of the things that were confirmed or were learned along the way.
If ever there was doubt about my adhd, this is literally the best example I can give them.
Do not use decent sampler when it crashes all the time. (Used it.)
Do not think it’s ok I’ll bounce down at the start. (It wasn’t.)
After bouncing down, don’t delete the DS tracks without saving the patches. (You bet I did.)
Do not wait until you’ve done above and added kick to realise you’ve forgot to change default bpm. ( arrrrgh.)
Do not go back into DS and do that with your 2 kick parts and bounce down cos it’ll crash. (I’m an idiot.)
Do change the length of your risers before you forget. (I forgot.)
Sort out the bass before you run out of time. (Seriously, I play bass ffs that’ll take seconds. Nope.)
So in the spirit of the challenge I call this special symbols clown car

@squeals I thoroughly enjoyed that!
Shame the track is private. I'd have loved to given it a fave.
@as_in_the_skies Can't wait to hear what you concoct.
Used Logic on Mac, but nothing that couldn't be done on an iPad.
Used a Logic drummer and adjusted some of the sections settings as the track progressed. Would have changed more such as seperate drums, but no time for that.
Recorded my Minilogue XD through my SP404MK2 in three sections as my initial one track go went wrong.
Used a Logic Bass Player and deleted its bass line and quickly made a basic line from scratch with the sequencer. Added a synth arp using the same bass line to thicken the line. Would have altered the second line usually, but no time.
Quickly played a lead line and just spent 2 minutes cleaning up duff notes.
No time to add any more, so added a few fx, eqs and ran the Logic mastering and called it a day.
A 2 minute 5 sound piece made in one hour, where I usually use at least 20 tracks and spend days messing with midi and layering.
Interesting challenge
Well done both of you. Both sound great tracks to squeeze into one hour!
Shows what you can do in one hour and definitely not a failure in my book
While I wouldn't call mine a full track really, I did learn that I often spend way too long fiddling with sounds, midi, fx, positioning, small odd sound fx etc etc, that I lose track of where I originally meant to go with the music that's in my head.
The getting the basics down approach in a short time then expanding, is and approach that may help me actually finish more music, so I've definitely gained from participation in this challenge
In my mind, I can hear Aretha Franklin singing on this one. Really smooth sounding, @Dav.
A bit psychedelic, which I like. Cool song, Fruitbat.
@McD. Sure, I’ll add flugelhorn and some other things, I have some extra ideas for this kind of groove to add.
Thanks for listening @jwmmakerofmusic, @Fruitbat1919, @NeuM !
