Best affordable MIDI expression pedals

I’m looking for an expression pedal for Pianoteq. I need something cheap - any suggestions?

MIDI Expression pedals that actually transmit MIDI messages over 5-pin or USB are pretty rare. It's much easier to use a conventional analog pedal connected to a MIDI keyboard or other interface that can convert the signals to MIDI. For example, the oddly-named Chocolate Bluetooth controller has an expression pedal input.

  • What @uncledave said.

btw, I have the one @mjcouche linked. It works well enough. It's not a midi pedal though. It needs to be hooked up to something that can output midi from it as mentioned above.

One thing I did notice though is the midi output isn't super precise from the m-audio pedal hooked up to a BlueBoard or Chocolate. It's fine for general playing, but if you're trying to use it to control something requiring super high precision, it's not up to that task.

  • What would be an example of an analog pedal?

The m-audio pedal linked above and virtually anything labeled "expression pedal" that doesn't specifically mention that it outputs midi.

An "analog" pedal is just a potentiometer. It attenuates an electrical voltage supplied to it through one of the rings of its connecting cable and returns it on the other. It doesn't output midi. Whatever it's plugged into converts the voltage coming back from the pedal into midi.

  • I remember looking into this 5/6 years ago and there were limited options for an inexpensive, basic one. Looks like things haven’t changed much.

With that little side knob you can change the sensitivity. Combined with AUM values mapping for total values sent/ received, it works pretty well. Definitely need fine motor control of your individual toes. There’s been a few times I’ve pushed down a bit too hard in a slow part of a song and went full overdrive.

  • If using a blueboard, the blueboard app will calibrate the blueboard to the expression pedal. Made a big difference for me.

It's not really a sensitivity control so much as a range control. I had the opposite problem. I forgot it was there and couldn't figure out why I couldn't get a gain control to go past 30%.

    Ahahaha!!

I had the same issue a couple of days after getting my cheapo pedal 😅

About 45min of running thru all settings in Loopy, midi guitar, Swam, all custom control settings id setup thru loopy, hair dangerously close to being torn out

...then remembered the little knobby thing...

Aaahhhhhhh... the catharsis discovered thru shared temporary ignorance 👊

(Special emphasis towards the word TEMPORARY, was very much intended 😁)
