One synth that does it all (or most of it..!)
If you had to choose one AUv3 synth that is the most well rounded for all types of sounds (leads, bass, pads, keys, weird fx, etc.), which one would it be?
- it should include a big preset library
- it should be relatively easy to understand
- the interface should be well adapted for a touchscreen
- it should be relatively light on CPU
Thanks in advance ![]()

Synthmaster 2
Yeah, but what kind of music? All types? From Appalachian hillbilly music to Tibetan monk chanting to South Central rap music? There's no one-size-fits-all here, IMO.
I get what you are saying and I'm with you, but for the sake of the exercice, if you had to pick one that's the most well rounded for most types of music.
That depends. I rarely use factory presets so for me I can find use in just about any genre I touch
ButterSynth
If only one, another vote for synthmaster 2. Ridiculously huge preset library with many amazing sounds. Easy to use.
Gotta concur on SynthMaster 1 or 2, it ticks all those boxes easily. It's absolutely a one stop shop synth that can replicate damn near everything efficiently all within its own lil ecosystem.
Factory!
This💯.

Considering how 'Crash Prone' (when really starting to tweak patches from scratch) Synthmaster 2 still is after all these years I would go insane and go something more simple like iM1 or iWavestation which both cover a LOT of ground...
...or to keep it even simpler stitch with self-contained 'workstations' like NanoStudio 2, Drambo, SunVox, Cubasis, Logic etc.
Zeeon!
Zeeon is great but Virtual Analogue only. Synthmaster 2 has bug-ridden preset management which, for me at least, makes it unusable. It also has very limited additive Synthesis. Buttersynth sounds nice but doesn't support Additive Synthesis at all. For me, the best do-it-all synth has to be Tera Pro. It's fantastic once you get used to the unconventional user interface and sounds great.
yea I know Zeeon is VA. I meant it covered all the sounds OP was after, tons of presets, great interface and CPU friendly (which is what was asked). And the mod matrix opens up the synth at audio rate modulation for much more sounds than a simple virtual analog.
Agreed it does. I was focusing more on the title of the post. Tera Pro doesn't meet the 'easy to understand' criteria either to be fair. It's the only synth I use these days though.
Gotta go with Obsidian in Nanostudio 2 as well. Very well rounded with lots of tweakability
Despite over a decade of collecting iOS synths, I honestly don’t think I have one. They all have strengths and weaknesses, so I’ll often have to go through several to find a particular sound.
I guess key for me is a simple UI, so if I’m after a bass sound for example, I’ll load up Korg Dublin as that’s good for that sort of thing.
If I don’t have a particular sound in mind though, any old app with a random button will do.
So despite a bulging synth folder, I’m still looking, and the new Audiothing June is currently fluttering its eyelashes in my direction - nicely laid out UI, AND a random button!
Zeeon is great, I love the sound that comes out of it!
This got me thinking, which other synths have a randomize button?
Synthmaster 4 is forthcoming, isn’t it?
I agree. It does it all. I’ve said it before, I would buy a hardware version of Zeeon.
It depends. It’s about like asking what is the best guitar for those criteria, or what is the best mic for all-round recording. Everyone will have an opinion, but ultimately it should be possible to work with whatever you’ve got. Sometimes working with something new or less than ideal will prompt good results.
Another vote for synthmaster 2, but my desert island synth would be iVCS not because it does everything but because it’s so weird and unique.
While this is true, I find in most domains there are always tools that are more centric focussed. Are they the best tools for specific scenarios, maybe not, but they mostly get you "close enough" in a lot of situations. It may not be the case in synths, and if that's so, then I'm glad I asked, but your varied opinions matter to me a lot as they get me thinking and learning
All the Audiothing ones do I think (love it on RES-09), the Rob Jackson Anaolgy synths, Elastic OSC, Sunrizer.
It's a great feature. Use it all the time on RES-09 and the Rob Jackson ones. Always generates usable sounds...
Not yet😊. Synthmaster 3 is due in 2026 for iPad, but the bro’s will release a Player version first.

Just spend time with Blofeld…you won’t regret it !
bro, you have sx1000? Same UI as Res09 and June- I didn't even realize there was a lil Randomizer dice. Just tried it out and found them to be very useable. I'm baffled as to why i never used it before. thx
Better yet, there are locks u can use in combo with the randomizer so you only randomize what you want. That's such an important feature that any app with a randomizer should have imo!
I’m particularly fond of Obsidian, which is easy to use and since Samples can be used as an “oscillator”, it can sound like nearly any synth (not fully the same in practice, but close). Samples combined with virtual analog, wave-table, FM, etc. goes a long way to covering most sounds. If it had granular added to it, that would be amazing. I am surprised that there aren’t other iOS synths that have improved upon Obsidian and make major use of a “sample oscillator.” Maybe there is one that I just don’t know about…? Any suggestions?
Oscidia?
Hands down… The Korg M1 AUv3 with all the add on “carts”
It meets every single of your criteria.
Stellar collection of actually useful presets. Not just all the “ohhh look at the fart noises we can make” that take up a lot of synth presets in the iOS world. And if you wanna actually do covers or “genre” music, you will basically find the exact sound since the M1 is so legendary.
If you’re a player, it’s very responsive and expressive as well.
I don’t think most people bother to lift the hood on the thing, but if you do, it’s astonishingly deep in terms of editing. I wrote it off for the longest time as just a lame rompler… Big mistake. I could have saved a shitton of cash on my “synth hunt” if I would have dug in earlier.
Super stable.
It’s got great multitimbral capabilities (stacks, splits, ensembles, etc) in one instance.
I can run like 16 instances in AUM on a broken down Air2.
I’d then add ElasticOSC as more “experimental” synth, but now that it can load DX7 patches… Forgetaboutit! It’s s joy to work as a touch interface as well.
