Northern Lights

I wanted to pay homage to two of my early heroes, Wendy Carlos and Tomita. I’ve always loved the purity of synthesizers. As a woodwind player in the last century, I was taught to produce an even sound across all registers—no extraneous noises, no inconsistent attacks, and full control throughout a wide dynamic range. I got pretty good at it.
Once, a sound engineer told me he thought I was playing a synthesizer in the pit instead of a saxophone and suggested I “bump it up a little.” I found that funny—everyone else was trying to make synths sound like real instruments, while I was doing the opposite. Over time, it seemed the imperfections of acoustic instruments became the qualities people sought to emulate. Funny world we live in.
My ears (what’s left of them) still chase that same purity of tone that those early pioneers produced. With a few exceptions—mainly drums and some percussion—I don’t use samples, and nothing in this piece was recorded live with a microphone.
This composition is about a wild, primeval world. If you choose to listen, I thank you. It’s a bit long, but I couldn’t bring myself to cut anything.
Cheers!

I really enjoyed this. I had to listen a few times. It’s like a condensed version of a much, much larger composition consisting of multiple sections or “movements”, with a little rest in between. Each blends perfectly with the next. A few times you faked me out when I was expecting something new, but you repeated with some variations. You are tricky. My favorite parts are at 1:35 and 6:20. Reminds me of jazz fusion by Jean Luc Ponty or Weather Report. It’s like a short story with unexpected twists and turns. I didn’t hear Wendy Carlos or Tomita. I heard Boomer. You are a composer!
I’m going to listen again.
@Paulieworld you humble me. Praise from a giant like you makes it all worthwhile. It’s the quartal harmonies that I think give it the fusion sound. I wasn’t intending weather report but thinking about it, you are right, it does sound like that. “Good composers borrow, great composers steal” If true, I am formidable by virtue of grand larceny
thanks man.
LOL!
Are you familiar with the Bill Holman Band? I was thinking of you when I posted it, since you played in one of the country’s best big bands. It’s called Just Friends and it blows me away every time I listen to it. I would love to see the score. It’s a music reading challenge. I wonder what they thought when they first saw it. Probably… WTF! You have probably already heard it, but it’s still a great listen. I posted it in Other Music Content. Have a nice weekend.
This sounds like a whole movie soundtrack in 7 mins, cool! Nice work!

@Paulieworld summed my views up nicely with his first comment + loved that little section that starts at 6:50… just a great piece of music… and all on an iPad 🙏
@DMfan thanks for listening and the kind comment. Much appreciated.
@GeoTony just when I start getting discouraged that nobody else will listen, you come along and give me the motivation to keep going. Thank you.
A great listen! I think you’ve captured that purity.
So much musicality. A showreel. It would make a great internal demo for a top end hardware synthesiser.
@AndyHoneybone thank you for listening and the kind comments. Always appreciated.
