Changing the country of your Apple account - IAPs

Could anybody please share their direct experience with changing the country of their Apple account?

I've had multiple Apple accounts for many years: Australia, Korea, and the United States.

In my experience, apps/IAPs are more easily available and significantly cheaper via the U.S. store and it has been simple enough up until now to use online-purchased gift cards without having to hold a U.S. credit card connected to the Apple account.

In the last few years, I've had a handful of issues: Apple U.S. twice blocking purchases until I contact them and get the blocks lifted; issues with Apple Pay tied to territories and mobile phone numbers.

Now I am thinking of changing the U.S. account to Australia. Sadly, you cannot merge accounts. There are definitely issues around family sharing between the different regions that my life intersects and I'll have to look at those eventually but I was thinking I could use family sharing between my two main accounts -- after I change the U.S. account to an Australian one.

I've sunk many hard-earned dollars into apps and IAPs for iOS via the U.S. store and I don't want to lose that. Everything I'm reading from Apple suggests that the apps will simply move over to the account in the new region (where available), but I'm getting rather mixed messages on how IAP transfers actually work, or if they will work at all.

Any thoughts from people who have made the change? Is it worth it? Is it an actual simplification or will things get sticky? Any insights would be much appreciated.

  • I'm just posting in case anybody else ever wonders about this. I can report a successful transition from the U.S. to the Australian App Store/Apple Account. None of the apps in my account appear to have been upset by the change and, as far as I can tell, all IAPs are intact.

    The only issue was getting the account balance zeroed as I had $0.12 in credit from past gift cards...not enough to spend on anything in the App Store. I had to contact Apple support to get it removed before I could execute the region change.

  • Where are you? I never heard of this and didn't think it possible either. I'm in Sweden and the government here is pretty picky about getting their 25% tax on any purchase (moms), foregoing it might even be against the law but on that I'm not sure.

    I do believe that you need to be physically in the country of your Apple account. You cannot "cherry pick" a country.

    I don't think you need to physically be in the country, tbh, but you do definitely need a billing address and payment method (eg bank account) associated with that country.

    I don't think you need to physically be in the country, tbh, but you do definitely need a billing address and payment method (eg bank account) associated with that country.

    That is also my understanding. If you have a bank account and address in a "better" country, then by all means stick with the one that works.

  • I can only go on my experience, but for the U.S. (at least a decade ago) neither an address nor a payment method was requisite to setting up an Apple account.

    Having said that, they were both required for the Australian account when I changed over from the U.S. account.
