iPad as DAW controller
I’ll probably take the plunge into Ableton Live and/or Logic Pro on my Macbook, so I’m looking for a good controller to replace the clumsy fiddling with the MacBook’s keyboard and trackpad. I’d like something with faders, transport controls, encoders, etc. I was considering the Akai APC40 mk2, but then I thought — are there apps that let me use the iPad as a controller instead? Do you have tips for that? Does anyone use a similar setup?

If you use Logic there’s a dedicated controller app Apple make for the iPad. It’s great.
For controlling Ableton Live with your iPhone/iPad this is a great app :

Thanks! Lot of promising apps there! One Control Plus seems to be the closest I’m looking for.
Thank you! I’ll deifinitely give it a try.
Thank you!
Logic Remote on iPad is great.
I’ve been using Surface Builder by 4pockets to make dedicated iPad controllers for Logic plugins. I’ve been building one for Synplant lately. It’s a hell of a lot of fun manipulating the branches via touch screen.
I feel like this is something you could build in Loopy Pro as well.
+1. A brilliant little controller.
Knobbler for Live

Still think Imaginando LK is one of the Best for Ableton etc.
+1 for logic remote on iPad. Works great for controlling Logic Pro and it’s plugins.
+1. It even works as a fairly capable standalone and AUv3 sequencer on iPad
i should try LK. I really like Knobbler.
Knobbler gone subscription I believe.
From 2017ish thru Pandemic Vacation 2020 I was using TouchOSC on a couple of Android tablets for various tasks between Ableton and stream controls
Its finicky, and truth be told I haven't touched it on iOS (2
5yr or so), but I will again when I get a desktop up and running and I'm back in Ableton

yes there are Ableton Live templates in Lemur as well. The advantage of TouchOSC/Lemur, or other controller apps is that they don’t have a subscription scheme. You own it, adjust the control surface to your projects (can be a huge time investment), and that’s it.
TouchOSC (can't speak to lemur, haven't used) also allows template creation on any device, and then wireless share to any other devices (on which you own the app)
So work on ideas anywhere - testing included, send right to specific device later
While template design is a little finicky (mistaps are easy while navigating scrollable menus - I preferred desktop design over android. Haven't attempted with pencil or iOS yet tho, probably what I need for my Beanstalk-bred fingers), the overall structure is hella cohesive across devices once you get a grasp on one UI
There is still a lifetime purchase option for Knobbler (£34.99). Also the option of a monthly (£1.99) or annual sub (£19.99), as well as a free month trial.
