SONIC MOVES - Body Interactive Sound & Music (Update): MIDI, OSC & new pricing

Dear colleagues in digital sound and music,
It's Jakob, alongside my work at Mazetools and Ectoplastic, Marc-André Weibezahn (Affine Tuning) and me have been developing a new project: Sonic Moves, a new independent digital platform for creating and experiencing body-interactive sound. It connects movement to music through real-time 3D body tracking using standard device cameras. Designed as a plug & play system, Sonic Moves runs completely offline and makes interactive audio works accessible on everyday iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

https://sonicmoves.net

Our system consists of two apps:
Sonic Moves Creator (macOS, iPadOS)
A visual authoring tool for designing body-interactive compositions. It features a node-based audio engine with dozens of audio sources, effects, and instruments. Almost every musical parameter (e.g., pitch, velocity, filter, fx) can be controlled through live movement. Creators can preview their work using built-in tracking, video input, or motion data streamed from the Player app. Final compositions can be exported as a single file and distributed freely.
App Store Creator

Sonic Moves Player (iOS, iPadOS)
A free app for exploring motion-controlled sound compositions. Users can load compositions or open shared URLs and begin interacting with sound through movement. The Player includes real-time camera tracking and can also send motion data to the Creator app as a companion device.
App Store Player

I can imagine that many people are interested in the MIDI feature, which allows you to control other apps through movements...There are other technical details that I would like to share with you here:

  • AudioKit for the AudioEngine
  • BlazePose (MediaPipe) for the BodyTracking
  • ARKit for the BodyTracking within relation to the room
  • PHASE – Apple’s spatial audio engine for 3D audio combined with head tracking and binaural rendering
  • MIDIKit – Enables Sonic Moves to send motion-driven MIDI data to external apps and instruments, expanding use cases into DAW control and live performance setups
  • The platform works fully offline and requires no cloud services or external hardware

On our website you will get a brief overview and some first tutorials.

As an independent two people startup, we follow an ambitious roadmap and there are many things especially for the pro audio community which are planned. Also, we think about smaller app decouplings to provide specific users with a solution that is not so expensive. We are aware that the total price for the creator is quite high, but on the other hand, the system offers many options for creating your own applications, and of course we as developers have to live. On the other hand, new things need time to grow and a lot of passion. With this interface, we want to provide a tool that gives musicians an interface to the art of dance and the people who dance, and puts them in the role of entering a new shared creative level with their sound.

We are interested in your feedback and get in exchange with you :) cheers!

  • Subscription! Thank you but no thank you.

MusiKraken has been around long now, doing most of what you outline here (and more). For a one time fee (goes on sale too, every now and then). Jus'saying.

  • I am DEEPLY fascinated in this. Got MusiKraken on Android and messed with some lightly, but android and midi don't play nice (spoilt af by iOS now), osc either (TouchOSC android -> iOS is a headache)

But this, specifically focused (har har) on the camera angle that is merely incorporated into MK...

Yeah, very intrigued... Might give 'er a swing this weekend when I (hopefully?) get more than a few minutes to string together 😂😂😅🥺

Hi, that's always the question, sure in music sector subscription isn't common, for that reason we offer also an Life-Time In-App-Purchase, which is currently in discount for 99$.

If you decide for subscription, the paywall limits just the tracking to 30sec and the export, so you can compose a song or do a patch with the app even after the 14 days trail is over. If you like to do a performance or export a song you can go for a subscription as long as you need. I guess thats fair and realistic, because this is a long term project. However, I totaly can understand if you dont like subscriptions, thats why the perpetual IAP...

Sure we know MusiKraken, its an awesome project, Sonic Moves is more low-threshold and focuses on visual comprehensibility, but I think that's a matter of taste.
We've been working on this topic for a long time. Our developer and designer Marc-Andre wrote his master's thesis on the topic in 2019 and our colleagues at Mazetools have also been working on the topic for a long time, we have linked two articles on this at the bottom of our About page (Further Reading): https://sonicmoves.net/about.html

I'm curious what your closer impression is.

We have now also added a few demos to the homepage. Cheers!

  • Hi guys, we updated a bunch of new stuff and changed also our pricing policy @Pxlhg ;)

We changed the free version so you can try it out properly, offer MIDI and OSC package as one time purchase and reduced the price for the full version, also as one time purchase.

You can insert own videos on iPad and Mac as well as real time camera tracking on Mac.

Yes, there are other tools with similarities like music raken, which are fine with less price, but we focused on UI and UX, and we implemented an audio engine (audiokit) to create whole body interactive compositions or combine it with OSC for visuals. we appreciate your feedback and looking forwar :)

You will find all information on https://sonicmoves.net/

    Cheers, Jakob

Neat, reminds me of the setup Imogean Heap had during that whole Hide and Seek spectacle.

did she use tracking in any way? I looked for videos, but without luck

  • I’m always up for trying movement to sound systems as someone who works with disabled people but already owning MusiKraken that I see Sonic Moves at least visually has been inspired by I cannot see why I should invest in this.

One potential reason for choosing this would be the ease of use but from what I’ve seen so far it seems this requires just as much technical knowhow as MusiKraken.

    I got you!

Think she goes into how it all works before the last song. Pretty rad!

  • Amazing video. Also having a crazy good voice like Imogen Heap helps :p

Same you can do with Sonic Moves Creator (on Mac or from iPad) sending tracking data to Ableton via MIDI or Max4Live via OSC (or any other DAW). Need to make a tutorial about it ;)
