Svengoolie Theme Cover with GeoShred
My cover of the Svengoolie Theme using @MoForte ‘s amazing GeoShred iPad instrument + the GeoSWAM Tenor Sax instrument.
Svengoolie is a late night TV horror host, and the theme was composed by his musical director Doug Scharf (AKA Doug Graves). The show emerged as a long-running local program in the Chicago area (Berwyn!) and in recent years expanded nationally, airing Saturday nights on MeTV.
Happy Halloween!

That was great! Thanks for sharing. Definitely gonna try and dig around for some Svengoolie episodes online. Looks like a blast! Happy Halloween to you as well
Edit: JACKPOT!

Nice one @Lady_App_titude
When I first introduced the Svengoolie show to the GF a few years back, she wasn’t having it.
Now, especially since I pointed out to her that his sidekick “Nostalgiaferatoo” is played by Bill Leaf, who is also “Bill - the cartoon curator” on “Tune-In with me”, ..now she’s hooked, and we “tune in” every Saturday night!
Always enjoy these local acts that subsequently go national because of their entertainment value. I wonder if he was inspired by Elvira?
Anyway, good cover!
Don’t know the references but you got me with the GeoShred tag 😊
As often with your excellent work… way too short ☹️
I'm not a fan of Svengoolie (he's annoying to me), but I am a huge fan of your music. You did the themesong great justice.
Did you compile it all in Digital Performer again, friend?
Yes, that is very early Svengoolie. Rich Koz has been playing the role since the late 70s (taking it over from Jerry G. Bishop, the original Svengoolie who only played it for a few years in the early 70s). Things were much wilder back then!
I didn't grow up with it in the Chicago area, but in my region we had Ghoulardi (and later The Ghoul), so when I ran across Svengoolie, I vibed with it immediately... took me right back to my childhood. And yes, Nostalgiaferatoo is definitely my favorite of the Sven Squad. And yes, I tripped when I learned he was played by Bill Leff the cartoon guy!
Thanks! Svengoolie predates Elvira by at least a decade. However, the broadcast era spawned many different late night horror hosts in various parts of the country, going all the way back to the beginning days or television. Apparently, Elvira was inspired by a 50s horror hostess called "Vampira" and was even sued over similarities.
The earliest I remember was Ghoulardi, who was a massive phenomenon in the northern Ohio broadcast market in the early 60s. He had spikey hair, horn rimmed glasses, and wore a lab coat covered in buttons. He was super subversive and a master at poking fun at conventions and lampooning authority figures. He would light things on fire and blow up toys with firecrackers on air. (Could never get away with that today!) We kids just loved it! Many punk rock bands that later emerged from the Cleveland/Akron area would cite Ghoulardi as an early influence on the punk movement.
Yes, DP w/ the iPad connected via IDAM. For this I just recorded GeoShred as audio, but DP now supports MPE and GeoShred Studio for Mac just released support for VST and AU plugin format (DP reads both), so I'm eager to dig into all that in DP!
Oh that's so cool!
Oh, and speaking of DP.. As it so happens, I created this clip as part of an "assignment" for the MOTU DP group. There is a group that meets once a week via Zoom led by Matt Lapoint of MOTU. Every once in a while, he does an assignment, which is a way to showcase the MOTU group users. This time is the requirements were Halloween theme, it had to use at least one built-in MOTU instrument, MOTU's Proverb convolution reverb on at least once part, and be no more than 45 seconds long. That's why the clip is short. I used the an acoustic bass sound from the MOTU instruments collection to meet that requirement.
I find that absolutely impressive.
I love hearing about processes and back stories. I'm so glad you're still around here to impress us with your wonderful talents. Keep it up.
I like your version! I live here (if you can call it that) and Svengoolie is still playing. My wife is not a fan, but I overrule when it comes to Svengoolie. I’m hoping that he will show “The Incredible Two Headed Transplant”. It’s a classic.
Thanks! GeoShred is incredible.
Berwyn!
The one I keep hoping for is the original War of the World from the 50s. They used to show that all the time on our local late night horror show when I was a kid. (Also, Little Shop of Horrors -- also a classic, so bad, so classic that they made a musical about it, but not a personal favorite.) But I checked and Svengoolie has never shown War of the Worlds. Could have to do with getting the rights.
Bruce Dern is a national treasure!
This sounds great, LA!
Does anyone remember a horror host from the early days of cable named Dead Ernest?
And no, not that rubber-faced friend of Verne.
