Looking for low CPU DAW

Hi guys, I’ll try on main page. I own Cubasis 2 I belive, but it would take too much space.
Hence I’m looking for low cpu low disc space DAW in which I could record and edit aum doodles. What would you advice?

If you're looking for something just to edit audio in, Harmonic Dog's Multitrack DAW works a treat.

    https://www.harmonicdog.com/

Has no MIDI functionality, but it's definitely light on CPU and is 16.4mb download.

    EDIT: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/multitrack-daw/id329322101

  • Audio Evolution Mobile Studio - recent updates have improved this app dramatically. Closest I’ve found to NS2 but with audio tracks. Manual is excellent. If I couldn’t figure out how to do something the manual always had the answer in a clear and concise fashion.

The recording can be done the most efficiently right in AUM. Just name your session and channels first, then arm any tracks you want to record and press REC. All your stems end up neatly organized in a folder with the session name. It also has the "sync quantum" that you can set so that your recording's can easily be ended right at the end of a bar, sometimes saving editing time.

MultiTrack DAW is a lightweight and mostly distraction free environment for basic editing and arranging. Audio Evolution Mobile Studio has stronger editing capabilities but also more potential for distraction. Both have slightly unusual interfaces to get used to, but not anything to hard to learn for the basics.

Recording AUM jams directly into a DAW involves setup time and app switching. I think it's easier to do the recording directly in AUM rather than set up Inter-App Audio to do it directly. That's just my preference though.

  • @wim, this is interesting, I didn't think of using AUM as a jam/demo recorder. I don't own it and use Loopy Pro for this purpose exclusively now, though obviously LP has so many other features and it's not a direct apples-to-apples comparison, but wondering if you might share a bit more about when/why you do demo/jam recording in AUM and if (and if so, when/why) you do it in Loopy Pro (or other apps)...Or if this is too ambiguous question, just let me know

It’s amazing you can get a 32 track audio recorder in your pocket.

Truly is. :) I still use Multitrack DAW from time to time.

@wim I must've misread Mateusz's original post. I thought they wanted a DAW to mixdown stems recorded from AUM in rather than IAA capability, which Multitrack DAW already has. Yeah, I agree though that setting up IAA is a right proper pain in the arse which is best avoided.

FWIW, I initially thought I would mostly be using LP as a recorder in AUM but found that for me, LP was far more efficient for me as a jam recorder than AUM. Anything I record is immediately available for playback without having to load them into file players. The timeline is a convenient way to construct a a DAW-like sequence. Stems are easily exported.

I rarely use AUM any more, and never for recording. Loopy works much better for that purpose for me. I was only commenting in context of the OP question.

It does have some MIDI capability. It can host AUv3 and IAA instruments and they can be played via external MIDI. It's not the greatest for that, but it does work.

What I meant was, if they want to record an AUM jam into a DAW for mix down, they have to host AUM as an IAA inside the DAW. That's sort of a pain to set up, so IMO getting the stems in AUM is easier. They may have other reasons for wanting to record live into the DAW.

Either way, MultiTrack DAW is an excellent recommendation as far as I'm concerned. 👍🏼

Today I learned that Multitrack DAW has MIDI capabilities, just not in an obvious sort of manner. :) Xequence would be an appropriate choice to drive those hosted instruments in my own opinion.

Thanks mate. :) I really do love Multitrack DAW given how light it is on CPU and easy to navigate once you grok the workflow (which isn't too tough to wrap one's head around, at least for me personally).

yeh, not hard to learn really, but the way you get to the editing features, and assign instrument inputs and FX are enough different that I thought I should mention it.

  • I used both and found, for my monkey brain, AEMS much more straightforward to edit audio.

All good mate. :) We all have our own tastes and preferences and workflows. All the best.

Sounds like you used to use AUM - why the switch to LP?

Ooof. That would be a long post. I'm not sure I could do the topic justice. Let's just say that Loopy has all the hosting, mixing, and routing** I need from AUM, but also adds almost infinite other capabilities.

** Perhaps a little more fun and intuitive to set up in AUM, but I'm used to Loopy now so I no longer miss that much.

  • Oh, a discussion here. Cool. Thanks for pointing out to different daw’s and alike. @wim I’m looking at Loopy, just wish I had more knowledge and strict mind. Not wandering one. Right now I can’t get around AUM, lol
