iOS-only Album - The Voice in the Silence - (Shoegaze extravaganza)

10 songs all produced on the iPad, using Logic Pro and too many plugins, Other Desert Cities coming in for some serious abuse and over-use 😆

All the guitars are real, as are the vocals (unfortunately some might say 😅), the only AI involved is from Logic's drummer, everything else is based on some kind of physical performance, even if that is just playing keys on the glass.

Like everyone else here, music is a labour of love for me, and a lot of love went into making this. Hopefully for some of you it will resonate, if you're into 90s-style shoegaze of course.

  • Fantastic tracks! This is the shoegaze I grew up with (MBV, Jonestown, slowdive etc) and listening brings back so many memories from the 90s. Over the years the genre turned into a huge umbrella, people arguing that bands like the Deftones fit the bill. Which is fine, imo shoegaze is less a genre and more a tongue in cheek reference to the presence of countless effects, so I say the more the merrier! But it is becoming harder to google things like “best shoegaze 2024” and expect to receive results that are akin to the type of music you’ve made here. But that’s a great way to expand my horizons, right? This will get multiple relistens on my end, very inspiring. Thanks for Sharon 🤙

Thanks for taking the time to listen. MBV are a touchstone band for me, I discovered them when I was in sixth form in the late 80s, a friend had You Made Me Realise in his collection and I fell in love with it. Then Glider came out when I was at uni, and it was mind-blowing with those seasick guitars. Loveless came out the following year and it's to this day my favourite ever record from Creation (not an Oasis fan 😅).

Slowdive are also awesome, I actually prefer their two recent comeback albums to their 90s output, they are doing their best work right now IMO.

  • Congrats on the release!

Not really the music I listen to but I put it on while working on some of my art and as it's Friday I added some volume to the room as well. Listened to the full album without even thinking of changing, that's all you get from me.😉

Thanks for listening all the way through, I appreciate it! (especially if it's not really your genre).

Had no idea slowdive had put out current stuff, will give a listen for sure. Also hadn’t heard those MBV eps/albums before, saw they aren’t on Apple Music (sheesh) but I’ll find them somehow and give a listen as well. Being that shoegaze and dub music share the whole “drowning in fx” type thang, I’ve recently been trying to make some dub shoegaze sounds. Nothing promising yet, but it’s a fun lil diversion to experiment with

  • Great to see another album drop from you. I look forward to listening - sometime this weekend.

  • Congratulations on a great album Richard.

You are proving the detractors that great music can absolutely be done on a iPad.

  • Beautiful stuff.

  • I listened to this album while taking a long walk this morning. Sublime work, Richard! It's cold and overcast outside, but what I listened to warmed up my soul. Good looking out, mate.

Dub/Shoegaze sounds like a fun mashup!

The Glider EP from MBV wat the first time I heard Soon, which of course was also on Loveless, so it was a glimpse into their new sound. It's stood the test of time pretty well.

As for Slowdive, here's some of their newer tracks, this one is from the 2017 album Slowdive:

And this one is from 2023:

Thanks, I know we share some similar tastes.

When you consider how many legendary tracks were recorded on four-track tape, having a whole studio on an iPad is an amazing luxury. The main advantage is that we don't need to pay for studio time so we can develop songs for as long as we want.

Loveless and Glider are MAGNIFICENT! I started 2023 Everything is Alive but my listen got interrupted. Definitely an evolution, a lot more digital than the slowdive I know. I’ll check out the self titled as well. Sorry for steering off topic, thanks again for the reccs!

You're welcome. Loveless is the definitive shoegaze album, never been bettered.

Fender made some videos with Kevin Shields where he talks about how he came across his sound by misusing the tremolo arm on an Jazzmaster:

Yes in the guitar music département and in the Blender 3D département.

Exactly! I work very slowly on music but having the iPad always ready is amazing.

    Hi Richard,
after you called it shoegaze, it became a must-hear for me.
On Spotify, I listened to the album all the way through at once.
I wasn't disappointed. Your album convinced me – it's amazing what's possible with iOS. Great stuff!!👍🏽
You shouldn't have teased anything about the drums, because then I focused on that – no Laurence Colbert, I would have mixed it more prominently, but it's still very good.
Sweet September Rain and Caught in the Fire were my favorites. The album-cover is great too.
👍🏽👍🏽It was fun – I'll continue to follow you, I'm listening to Some Days right now...
    Greetings!

Thanks! Much appreciated, I know that listening to a full album is a big ask, so I'm always grateful to people who do listen to the whole thing. 😊

  • Logic Pro users let's go! B)

Beautiful album! I listened all the tracks while in the making and Richard has a masterful touch not only as a musician but as a producer too, this album is a pleasure to listen to.

  • Listening this am…

Love those guitars that come in at 35s on the 1st track Voice in the Silence!

Great beat/groove in All the Tragic Lovers

After the first several tracks I feel like your singing has become more confident & stronger. Listening to the album feels like comfort food - with the tones and songs feeling like some old forgotten 90s shoegaze band rediscovered. As usual the mix sounds great and is faithful to that style of music. I think those logic drummers are awesome! Another solid release.

Thanks for listening, as one of my favourite artists on this forum your opinion is much appreciated.

  • Another couple of listens. You've managed to snag me away from Justice and Daft Punk. I love Shoegaze, but this is possibly the best I've heard.

  • What a fantastic collection of songs. These really show off your songwriting skills, with catchy choruses a particular strong suit. Your vocals are sounding better than ever and the guitar work is always exemplary.

The sequencing and balance are really great too. The album flows really nicely and the songs fit together perfectly.

Top drawer stuff... Long live shoegaze! :)

I'm a huge fan of Daft Punk, so that is a compliment indeed.

Thanks, the vocals have been a long journey with slow progress, but people are less likely to compain about them than they used to, so I'll take that as a win 😆

The songwriting and vocal melodies have always been my primary focus, I work insanely hard at writing the vocals, the amount of ideas that get discarded until I find something I like is gigantic, there are at least 10 deleted melody ideas for evey one I keep. That blend of guitars and hooky vocals is what I enjoy listening to, and what I also hope to create.

Congratulations on the release, Richard! The album flows flawlessly, great tracklist. All your usual ingredients are here: catchy melodies, heartfelt and poignant lyrics, wrapped in perfect shoegaze and dream pop apparel. The production is impeccable for the style and your guitar sounds as good as ever !
It has been great to witness the evolution of all those tracks sometimes even from their raw early stages and see you growing musically and vocally over the years has been one the greatest inspiration to try to do the same. Wishing the best for the album and sending you tons of hugs and love, dear friend !

Thanks! One thing I never expected as I selfishly embarked on this journey was that my slow and painful progress would inspire anyone, so I'm honoured to have served as an inspiration to you, whose skills far surpass mine. As the cliché goes, maybe the real treasure was the friends we made along the way... 😆
