I know what you mean, but given that their history and that it’s on V9, gives me comfort that it will be long supported, as opposed to some fly-by-night dev or devs.
They already asked for 99€ for a Stage (Play back then) license of Pianoteq 3 in 2011 when I first bought it.
Since then it developed into an almost completely realistic physical model of a real piano. And you don’t only get a desktop version but also one for iPad and iPhone included. So I find the 139$ they ask for a Stage license these days rather fair (considering inflation and all the development that went into it over many years).
But yeah it’s a lot of money if it’s only used as an AUv3 on iPad.

Yes, it's not like you're paying just for the AUv3 version. You also get the desktop version, they come together and you can't separate them. And actually, the price is lower than many competing piano libraries on desktop, plus you get the AUv3 version thrown in for free. But if you only want AUv3, it is expensive and there are several good piano solutions on AUv3 that cost much less.
And then the hereouthelo.
BTW i figureded it out the how to get strum soundings. In pianotek disable legato did nothing but simply toggling sustain in geoshred surface worked. MIDI out mode is first time for me in GS. Usualy using GS presets, but these piano tech sounds so much better imo. Mind you i only have real life experience with more traditional instruments like synths and samplers and sequencers too.
Pretty sure that’s an upgrade if you already have Stage.
Woah woah woah woah..woah. You mean you pay an additional $129.99 to ugrade from Stage??!! Or would that be an upgrade from Stage from an older pianoteq version?
I’m not intentionally sounding like a tire-kicker, though i realize i am. But this is precisely the reason I’ve been on the fence about pianoteq since I’ve learned about it when it first came to ios:: not the cost, but any information regarding pricing seems obtuse and cryptic. That or I’m losing my ability to critically read.
The following will be my final questions regarding pianoteq and i thank you all for your patience.
What is the bare minimum i can buy? A Stage license? If so, and should i eventually want a third instrument pack, can i just spend the 49.99 on an individual pack?
Yes. Upgrading from Stage to Standard gives you tweaking options (plus one instrument pack), and then upgrading from Standard to Pro gives you even more tweaking options (plus another instrument pack). Upgrading across versions allows you to keep everything you have; you don’t start over.
I understand this, and I’d definitely use it on Mac and PC too, not just iPad, but it’s like $200aud which is ooooooffffff… for just two instruments lol
That's not all that surprising for a quality desktop plugin - which it is, with an iOS plugin thrown in. Thinking of it as an iOS plugin that also runs on desktop ... yeah, in that light it would seem crazy high. Too rich for my blood, that's for sure, but I get the logic behind the pricing.

Yeah that’s how I saw it. I never gave Pianoteq much real thought until I had a desktop. It looks like a lot of piano VSTs are around
$30 - $300. Pianoteq instruments are $50 after the initial buy in, are physically modeled with tons of adjustable parameters, and the ability to morph instruments together opens up a lot of creative options. Being physically modeled also means a very small footprint.
Look at it next to another customizable physically modeled VST VariFlute from Audio Modeling. Intro price is $40, but it’ll be $200 once the intro price finishes. And that’s just on desktop. It’s a great instrument and I don’t think that’s a terrible price for a desktop VST you can tweak however you want.
Or look at KORG Gadget which is like $300 new (on sale for $150 right now. Tempting…). If you get that on both platforms that’s $340 before buying all the IAPs on iOS.
I love Pianoteq and haven’t had an urge to get any other piano plugins since getting it. Or any other instrument I could get in there. I’d be more inclined to get the harp pack in Pianoteq than purchase a separate VST.
Don’t let me talk you into dropping that much money on a VST though. As much as I use it that’s a lot of money. I say it’s money well spent, though my wife may disagree 😜
Bingo. I was already using Pianoteq on desktop for years before the iOS app came along, so for me to have those exact same ultra high quality acoustic and electric pianos in both my studio and on-the-go on my iPad is incredible and still blows my mind each day.
Are we able to sync presets between desktop and iOS?
An iOS only variant selling at £50 + 15-20 for extra models would do very well at bringing in new iOS only users that would never buy at the current price and would only marginally effect core sales, but how big is the iOS market to be worth it.

I highly recommend the Electric Piano pack as you get both Rhodes and Wurly (and v1 and v2 of both) and they sound amazing.
Combine that with a good acoustic piano and you are golden. I think the Steinway D is the best value as you get both the NY and Hamburg versions for the price of one, and these models also have more presets than some of the others.
Those are the two packs I originally picked when I first bought Stage.
Since then, I also splurged on the Hohner pack mainly for the Clavinet, but you also get Pianet N & T and Electra-Piano as well which all sound great, so the value is very high with that pack too.
Eventually I also want to get the Classical Guitar and Harp packs (possibly during the next sale).

Absolutely - the CP-80 and cimbalom are highlights of buying a Pianoteq licence imo.
Has anyone found a way to install the 2 free instruments packs (KIviR.ptq and bells.ptq) into Pianoteq on iOS? The drag and drop method doesn’t work for me, neither does Share.
It's definitely possible, as I did it a few years ago, but I can't remember any special procedure. Hopefully someone else will, otherwise if you email Modartt, they'll know. Does just clicking on the files work?
Thanks … I’ve set up a support ticket in the meantime but will try clicking the files. Might work if the Pianoteq installation set up a file association for .PTQ files.
UPDATE: Tapping the PTQ file opens Pianoteq but nothing is installed.
UPDATE: It’s in Options menu … There is a an “Install PTQ” button at the bottom. Sorted now 👍
