Hi all,
this topic is an expansion of topic on how to start producing noise music.
I invite you to share your compositions from the topic field.
Nobody is excluded.
If you produce IDM, EDM, Hip-Hop, composition, or whoever knows what 😉 maybe it will be a good practice to step out of your comfort zone?
Let’s share, write about production techniques, and apps and/or hardware used. Let’s grow.
I should start with a track to make you feel welcome, but it’s still in the making 😅
So who is brave enough to begin this story?

Sounds great
shhhhhhhhhhhhh !!! shhhhhhshhhhhhhsssssss??
bodokbodokbo dok bohhhhhh...
ssssssss ssssss! sssssssssssss!!
shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhgr?!
loop[or not]
thanks for listening!
edit: i guess you can do it in drambo;)
Ok, great we’ve got our first track!
Any insight into creative process? Booze? Maybe a little bit too much
of shhss sound
one can take it as a piece of "dadaism", or "neue musik".
when read aloud, the music is immediately there.
the "shhh" is the central sound.
can be considered as noise.
can be modulated by the interpreting voice tract lips, mouth, throat etc.
can also be remixed, rearranged , extended by interpreter.
might be performed solo, or by ensemble.
the creative process on my side was "direct brain to typing" improvisation.
Now it would be good if you could perform it, and record it, so we could have a first proper track
There's tracks posted all over the place under the proper tab: Creations&Collaborations in all of the genres, well most anyway that you suggest so why start a separate hole to file them under?
There's a thread called daily screen captures I haven't seen in a while that had somewhat same intention, loads of cool captures and that made more sense, since isn't genre but videos.
Nice try though, good luck!
Edit: just remembered: there's also song of the month, that's also cool.
there's no need to record it, because the recording is inherent part of the text.
reading the text is like pressing "play":)
that's the idea.
i'm sorry to hear you don't consider it a proper track.
@rototom
You always take an easy way? Because that’s easy way. Record it, how you read it.
@Pxlhg if it doesn’t make sense to you it doesn’t mean that some people might find it a good place to share mentioned tracks
Edit:
@rototom non audible pieces save for your own topic, ok?
Thanks @Mateusz for doing this! I can see the value of such a thread. Sure people should post tracks "all over the place" but they can also give a heads up here to go check out their post if they want. I like the idea that I could check in on this thread and catch stuff and fellow-noise heads chatting and sharing.
Anyone doing cut-up noise with iOS? I imagine digital would lend itself quite well to this.... essentially triggering no-envelope sample playback. And lots of unmuting and muting. Any apps you lean towards? I imagine koala could be good.... Or maybe a sampler that can handle samples and round-robin triggering? I don't know I'm clueless.
Im not familiar with the Noise Music genre
Im rather adept at context clues, but my assumptions could be way off
Could anyone throw down some exemplary examples (preferably yt) for a better understanding of the thread/concept?
Play some noise music means more or less the same as play some metal….really depends who you ask!
Here are a few big names in the crowd
Merzbow - Pulse Demon
Massona - Hyper Chaotic
G.R. - Deathpile
I tend to like the stuff that’s not completely atonal
Yellow Swans - Going Places
@PapaBPoppin the emphasis in Noise Music is on Noise. Sometimes the genre is simply called noise.
Some people would say that it isn't music, because it can lack rhythm, tonality, harmony, melody... or any other element that is frequently associated with music. Music and noise can be exclusive concepts as well, although the difference isn't dependant on those elements either. The rain dripping outside my window may sound rhythmic, but it isn't music simply because it's just happening with no human involvement. (Although my landlord needs to fix the eavestrough.) It's just noise.
But if you have a generous definition of music, or at least an expansive one, then noise music is noise that is created and played with the intention of filling the role that music can fill. In other words, it's something that we listen to, created by people, because we want to hear it. And if you go beyond that then even something like Cage's 4'33" could be noise music, because some random or unwanted noises are bound to happen during the 'performance'.
I've never really listened to recorded noise music, but I've enjoyed a number of live performances of noise music, which tend to be radically different experiences (both from 'normal' music and from one another). Noise could feature feedback, static, degraded/bitcrushed sounds, machinery, industrial sounds, tape artifacts... in fact, almost any kind of sound that isn't typically musical could be involved in noise music.
The comments section 😂:
@Mateusz This one was from a rehearsal for live looping about a year ago for some sets early this year. Soma Terra into Loopy Pro with some fx…likely Audio Damage, Audiothing, and Eventide at the time. All iPad other than the synth.
I’d consider it noise adjacent sort of music. I like to use an ostinato, which I’d consider a type of drone, and distortion along with dissonant intervals in either the notes or filter resonance to build from harmonious to noisy over the course of the live loop piece.
I Melted Your Igloo
.
Here’s a recent one done entirely in AUM for a friendly challenge, which was “two of the same synth, however many fx busses, play and record it live without normal daw business, and only use AirPods”
I used two Moog Marianas and 4 fx busses with various Audiothing, Audio Damage, Eventide, Klevgrand, Moogerfooger, and Unfiltered Audio. Aaron Meyers’ Neon on sequencing and 4pockets Surface Builder to make a control surface to play it. Kinda follows the same theme as the Terra live looping piece….ostinato arp and building chaos. Here’s the controller and the song:

Hi @stown Thank you, pheew I thought this topic will turn into some „one man against the world”, mini games, quickly forgettable. I had small faith.
Anyway. Could you give an example of your favorite cut-up noise? I’m not familiar with sub genres.
About you technical question, I hope someone will be able to help. I’m also interested how
to trigger no envelope sample playback.
Maybe you’d have to use 4pokets Surface Builder and x instances of Koala or any sampler and trigger it somehow(?)
We have some Wizards here on the forum, even in this topic 🙂
@PapaBPoppin Stick to this topic, and you will hear more and more examples of what each type of mentioned „music” is.
Essentialy this topic is not to be a snob but rather a place for minority in non commercial music, and all misfits. But I belive we all are very eclectic.
@timfromtheborder Thanks, nice read. Sorry but I don’t feel right now to debate with it.
@Gavinski Nice example, great performance by the artist.
@MonsieurCheval You’re more than welcome here. And great you briefly explained whats going on behind. I listened to both tracks, and liked especially the second one. The tension and feeling of some sort of danger lurking just around the corner were constant. Great track.
First one didn’t resonate with me that much, I only felt a sadness, it really match the weather here 😉. About second track- great insight. I think that you’re some sort of mentioned Wizard, but bet your knowledge come from years of modular synthesis practices.
I will definitely have a lot of technical questions, how to set up things in ios enviroment, for you in the future.
@rs2000 Visit sometimes for a coffe
Is William Basinski (The Disintegretation Loops) considered noise music?
Tough one. Music shop „Soundohm” label it as Electronic. I would say it’s something between Noise and „Musique concrète” (AI: is a French term for "concrete music," a form of experimental composition that uses recorded sounds as its raw material)
Ok, I’ll wait for more examples then. Not sure I quite understand the genre and it’s boundaries yet 🤙
No worries, you’re not alone in it 🙂

Btw Wiliam Basinski Desintegrated Loops is a very interesting record. And would be a great example for @PapaBPoppin as what this topic is also about.
Oh, so it does fit. Ok cool!
I think that it's maybe twisting the definition a bit too much to call Disintegration Loops 'Noise Music'. It's too melodic imo, even when pretty disintegrated.
Hi guys, please take a look at the discussion topic. There is also a place for Musique Concrete and other types. Not only Noise. But here I think boundaries do blur
Sounds good! ☺️
A few glitch/noise samples indiscriminately mongrelized in the redoubtable Koala.
@rottencat Lovely! And inspiring! I love seeing people use Koala for ambient/noise/etc... I really need to figure out how to use it in that capacity... especially as I also have an sp404 mk2 with similar goals in mind. I think it was @sevenape who made a great video of how he uses Koala to these ends. Thank you for sharing that. Are you sending pads to their own individual outs for treatment in other fx? Or were all fx in Koala?
@Mateusz I'm actually not very familar with artists in this style but I have definitely heard some. I think this video gives a great rundown on it, although I'm sad the music samples are mixed low under this guy talking. I love his descriptions... they accurately convey the feel of this kind of music
I made some noise. Please listen with caution because it’s very noisy.
Nice! I had an ASMR feeling going and then it all flared up around the 45 second mark.....
Short and sweet
Hey! I'm glad that video is still helpful ( I have to do another with the mixer update, it's a game changer! ) I think in the video I was routing to tap delay but now it's unnecessary, everyuthing can be done inside Koala
