Is Tonex on iOS/iPad "Usable"?

I've always heard bad things about Tonex on the iPad (hell, the app has a 2.1 rating on the app store), but I heard that the app recently got an update and before I spend some money buying some amp packs I wanted to hear some testimonials from people that have used the app with apps like GB, Logic Pro or Cubasis.

  • I've used it in Drambo and loopy pro, both not extensively, though. The only problem I ran into was in loopy, that when I used more than one instance, on reloading the project only one remembered it's settings. Don't know if that is repeatable. As I mostly print it to audio anyway and don't leave the plugin in place, I decided to only have one instance and load the right preset before recording. I'm not a guitar tone expert by any stretch, but I like what the knobs do in Tonex, a lot more fun to tweak than any other ampsim I tried.

  • Absolutely usable. Absolutely lagging far behind the desktop version. No effects slots, which is a biggy.

I can only get sound out of it as an auv3. Standalone produces nothing. Unfortunately the current version has a bug where you can’t add tone models via tonenet in auv3, but can in standalone. Weird. Also, you can’t add tone models as files.

IK is pretty non-committal to fixing the issues.

That said, it does sound amazing and has been stable for me running as an auv3 in loopy. I run two instances; one for amp, one for dirt pedals.

  • Thanks for the responses. I'll have to take into account these nuances before fishing out $20 for each amp pack. I'll download it and see if there's any free amps I can try to test out performance in Logic Pro.

  • I bought ToneX Max directly from the IK multimedia website. It unlocked the ToneX Max in IOS for free!

I use it live during church worship! I'm hosting the tonex plugin inside Loopy Pro! Works so awesome!
I did have to buy the Xtone Pro audio midi interface to be able to control the plugins inside Loopy Pro and send audio to FOH for live playing.

I use it a lot. I mostly use a few captures I found on ToneNet.

  • Yeah. Was going to suggest. Look up some really good captures from toney. I highly recommend the free ones from Tone factor, The Studio Rats and Worship Tutorials.
Now if you ever wanted to have an amazing Dumble capture, then the ODS Legends pack is truly amazing! I've used that amp pack live and they sounded so amazing!

  • There are some fantastic captures on ToneNet but it takes some searching to find them. Also, Tonex, like NAM, requires different handling of input level than non-capture amp sims. Typically you want to run much lower input levels than you might think.

So true. Yesterday I went back and readjusted my input levels. Did -6DB for input and -18db for output in Loopy pro. I set my Xtone Pro volume pot to Max vol so Loopy Pro controls the max out level. Worked so beautiful!

You can download Tonex for free and get 20 free tone models from tonenet. The only problem, is there are 1000s to choose from.

  • I downloaded it and played around with the 'included' amps. I did notice that when I load up my custom IRs they sound pretty awful. These are IRs that I know sound really good with a Nembrini amp and IR loader.

Are you certain the models you were using were DI captures? I ask because adding an IR to a capture with a baked in cab probably wouldn’t sound good.

I’ve use my OwnHammer IRs quite a bit in Tonex and never had a problem. If the amp captures you are using aren’t to your taste, an IR might not make them sound better.

    You might be correct.

Unlike NAM, Tonex seems to suggest that the cab is a separate model that can be replaced independent of the amp model. Maybe some downloads do have a locked-in cab, of course.

  • Well I ended up going back to GigFast and NAM. Was having a bunch of hiccups in Logic but I might come back to it if it gets a 2.0 update.
