Triple Point (sampling pbelgium & McD) a Coexistence of Funk, Latin and Electronica

Developed from the ‘Free For All’ 4-bar sample from @pbelgium, my multi-genre voyage frames a theme and fretless bass and Rhodes piano features in various settings. 

I’ve chosen to rework Paul’s sample throughout: sliced, pitch and tempo shifted, reversed, etc. and thanks too to @McD for the trumpet and horns loop.

  • This is right up my alley! And yes, those @McD Horns are gnarly haha. That Rhodes sits quite nicely in the environment you’ve created. This is a headnodder for sure, especially when the reverse guitar section kicks in with the shimmering keys, and the marimba (?) parts remind me of classic video game OSTs from the 90s, a la Spyro the Dragon (did you know that was done by Stewart Copeland?). I think marimbas in any context give me that impression, probably a symptoms of all those late nights playing PlayStation 1 and gourging on junk food. Anywho, I’m rambling again, great track, love your vibe 🤙

  • Wow... The re-purposing of the source loops into new pitch and tempos is impressive. Then you raise the bar by overlaying a complex sing structure with some great solo playing. I hope to hear more takes on this type of IOS magic.

    @Paulieworld has done a lot of work in this re-use as a production technique.

    Rhodes and Marimbas are 2 of my favorite instrumental choices for syncopated jazz leads.

    Pleased you like it @squishy. Wasn’t aware the Stewart Copeland album came with a free game as one YT comment put it :). Happy days. My rhythms originate from Tito Puente’s ‘Drumming with the Mambo King’ book. Couldn’t find a 3/4 latin groove so I adopted a 6/8 Afro-Cuban beat. Thanks for listening. Ramble on!

    Couldn’t find the meaning of ‘incrunktuotist’ but thank you for your comment.
    I was a bit phased when I first listened to @McD’s donation - I got the hair-raising close harmony but had no clue about how I could incorporate it. When I reversed the guitar loop I had to realign the clip so the harmonies would work up with the original sequence. I used Eventide’s new Temperance ‘musical’ reverb to add a pad-like aura and then the horn loop fell into place. To keep the story unfolding I faded in Harmony Bloom driving some DX7 FM sounds to create the ‘twinkly cosmic section’ you hear at 2:20. Great you enjoyed it.

    You spoil me @Geotony. A like and comment on SoundCloud too. Thank you. The bass solo is on my Ibanez 5-string fretless. The synth bass is Moog Model 15 modular - it’s a very basic patch but there’s something about those modules that gives it a really deep quality. The bass line is made up of 3 elements - Paul’s original acoustic guitar line, the Moog and the Pianoteq Clavinet - all weaving around each other. And the Rhodes is my 1978 Stage Mk I, a bit tatty on the outside and some rust on the legs. Just like me.

    I remember that Temperance vst was brought up in the desktop sales thread a lil while ago (think it was free or a demo or something?). Just watched a video on it; I guess the “Pro” version is out now. Looks marvelous! Can’t think of any verb on iOS that “does the thing”, almost like playing the harmonics of a shimmer verb. I’m sure you could somehow isolate frequencies with mix busses, but just thinking of tackling that in house makes my head swim. Sent them an email inquiring about potentially porting it. Their other products are on here, so fingers (and toes) crossed!

    Thanks Paul. learned a lot from our ‘Chillin’ With Leo’ collab - keeping the solos focused and maintaining interest through evolving changes. There’s a bit of ‘So What’ in the structure and the modulation into the last chorus was a happy accident while practising an overdub. Wouldn’t have existed without your starter so thanks again for that.

    Fertile indeed. It took some time to get into it. I'm comfortable with compound time signatures but funky 3/4 took some adjustment. Thanks as always for the listen and comment.

    Yes, @Paulieworld’s work is outstanding. In all my years, this track is the first time I’ve used sample slicing. I’ve lot a lot to learn.

    For transparency, I need to say that the track resulted from a hybrid iPad / desktop workflow. I started on iPad with Paul’s (@pbelgium’s) sample in Virsyn’s ReSlice (thanks to @TheAudioDabbler for the YT video on how to turn off the sequencer and make some sense of the app). I also used 4Pockets’ Neon to reverse the guitar loop. I then used Cubasis to work up some ideas on the form with the exported samples. When it came to recording the bass and Rhodes, it made sense to transfer to desktop (Ableton Live). I find I get backache if I spend more than an hour on the iPad and much as I’m a devotee, once a project gets to a certain size, it can feel a bit like trying to build a ship in a bottle.

    Many of the apps I used on desktop you’ll know from iOS: Moog Model 15, Iconica Strings, Pianoteq Steinway and Clavinet, MixBox, Harmony Bloom and Chord Generator.

    The marimbas are from Arturia’s Augmented MALLETS (Play, the free version) and the Rhodes is the real thing. In places, I’m doubling the marimba in places with VariFlute which I think adds to the depth.

    But perhaps the real iOS magic is this community without which this piece would never have been conceived.

    Heard back from Eventide, no plans of porting. Oh well 🤷🏻‍♂️ When I get some extra time I’ll take a crack at emulating
