Loop recording accuracy with audio or midi

I’m considering taking the plunge. Unfortunately the trial period came and went before I could even get started so I figured I’d ask the group. When recording loops, will there be any clipping at the beginning of the loop? Primarily when auto starting and stopping. I’ve been using Circa and I cannot get a clean loop. There’s always a bit clipped from the beginning and a the end always has a delay from the time it takes to stop recording. I’m hoping that loopy does better at this. Thanks

Loopy is used by quite a number of professionals as the core of their rigs. When properly set up it won't clip your loops unless your own timing is off. What you do you mean by 'auto starting and stopping'? Are you asking about auto-loop detection or triggering quantized recording/playback?

You can find a fairly sizable number of performances using Loopy Pro as well as tutorial videos where you can see it in action

  • Thanks for the answer. Probably both quantized recording and auto-loop detection. Considering my timing may be off, I’m hoping that I can arm a loop and just start playing. When the recording is triggered isn't there a delay or does loopy somehow have that worked out in the software?

I am not sure what you mean about a delay. Loopy lets you choose when recording starts and stops and plays in relation to when you trigger.

I suggest checking out some of the performance and tutorial videos via the link I posted so that you can see it in action.

How well auto-loop detection works is somewhat dependent on the audio you are playing. It works best for 1, 2 and 4 bar loops with a strong/clear rhythm.

If you really can't get the timing down for smooth loops, then there are also the "record intro" and "record tail" functions that will capture anything that does spill over the start and stop. You also have the ability to "rotate" loops and to adjust the start and stop points, as well as to adjust the start and end points individually.

With midi looping you can quantize all or some of the notes after the fact. The quantization can be destructive or non-destructive. You can also quantize audio loops, but not as cleanly as you can with midi loops.

I don't have particularly great timing but I can get clean loops with Loopy Pro. Yes, it took practice, but it's surprising how quickly my looping chops improved as I got into it.

btw, there is also the amazing retro record. More often than not, I just keep playing until I know I get a good take, then use a gesture to dump that last good take to the loop. I have swipe-left set for retro record.
