What are some good artists to get a feel for “electronic music”?
I’m not all too familiar with electronic music and related genres yet am making all this electronic music on iPad. The most I have to go on is Infected Mushroom (psytrance), Nine Inch Nails (Industrial Rock), Pretty Lights (glitch-hop?), chiptunes, Skrillex, Marshmallow, and SoundCloud rap.
It’s a broad genre and topic, so I’m open to exploring different artists and niches. What would your roadmap to exploring these genres be? Any other thoughts?

You could study Infected Mushroom for the next 10 years and still not get to the bottom of it all.
Your list in the OP is pretty darn good.
This thread is where I go when I hit a dead end listening. There is always something good there and it's not hard at all to zero in on the electronic stuff.

Tipper...
Electronic music is nothing more than pseudo science ;-)
“Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways
It's still rock and roll to me”
Theres a huge range of electronic music styles, and “genres” plus as you mentioned It permeates so many artists and styles it can be hard to define. I don’t listen to a ton of electronic music either but a lot of my favorite music has electronic elements or a blend of instruments and electronics. Heres a few that might make the cut.
Thom Yorke solo albums, some Radiohead too
Zero 7
Son Lux
I'm not overly versed in the world of electronic music, but these two albums immediately pop into my head when the topic is mentioned (edit: trance, if ya wanna be specific)
Tiësto - Majik vol iii

Dj Baby Anne - Live in Las Vegas, Club Ra

Ive also spent about 20min posting this as I got stuck between pulling up the vids to copy the link and successfully stepping away from the vids to actually post here 😅
So I'm not sure if that means they're actually worth while albums, or I'm stuck so hard in the past that any moment to live in the nostalgia is basically unavoidable 🤔
Edit: oh man, gonna totally cheat here and post the 3rd most recognizable electronica track of all time... When that bass kicks in at 2:01 ::hhhhnnnggggg::
Orbital - Halcyon and On and On

(Let's see: Hackers, first MK flick and... Sky High? I think that's where you'd recognize it lol)
Do you have Spotify, I listen to a lot of electronic music and could hook you up with some playlists I like!
These times I'm into :
And lots more!
Fluffy Little Clouds

Remind Me

Everyone liked NIN:

While not exactly “electronic”, this sounded like what would eventually become electronic:

Atoms For Peace (really so much Thom Yorke and Radiohead is electronic)

I don't know about good.. but I feel like this is a good time to assault you all with....
ANKLEPANTS
Have fun!
So many great suggestions above already. As @oscillotus mentioned, Plastikman (Richie Hawtin) is a great one to check out. I would also suggest Richie Hawtin's other music outside of Plastikman too.
Deadmau5 is a huge name in the Electronic (Dance) Music scene and worth checking out. Been a fan of his for a long time. He used to use FL Studio back in the day, which is how I first caught wind of his music back in 2006-2007ish. If you're looking for some solid Electronic Dance Music, he's pretty prolific.
Now moving away from Dance productions, I'm surprised to not see Vangelis or Jean-Michel Jarre mentioned. Boards of Canada too! Without these pioneers of Electronic Music, we probably wouldn't have Electronic Music in this day and age. Either that, or there'd be other pioneers.
And going even back further before synths, there were Pierre Schaeffer and Karlheinz Stockhausen whose experiments with sound and electronics paved the way for the future of Electronic Music.
I really liked the stuff that James Blake was making before whatever he’s been doin lately
Pretty sure he was heavily inspired by Burial. That’s another good one to check out!
I’m always down for a good Spotify playlist!
Great suggestions in here! @wim I wasn’t sure how popular Infected Mushroom is but I really want to get good enough to start replicating some of their sounds.
Here’s Heavyweight, the track that got me into them.
Drexciya, Aphex Twin, Autechre, EOD, Microlith, and Dave monolith are some of my favorites.
It’s such a broad description of music though. Just listen to anything that has the label attached, and delve into its roots and some of the weirder offshoots.
The first few albums of the mau5 and his At Play series is what's truly got me into electronic music back in the day. I find his productions very tight and he definitely had his own sound when the more mainstream electronic music acts all sounded the same for me.
What I like to do with a genre I'm not familiar with is beginning at the roots and working my way up. So yeah, as mentionned above, you can go all the way back in the 70s with Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis, Kraftwerk and the such. I get the chills everytime I listen to their stuff. They were ahead of their time.
That's a video I watch to get slapped with a good inferiority complex :
Jeff Mills Exhibitionist Mix 3
TR-909 Workout
Burial
Jai Paul
Animal Collective
Me too, love James Blake, especially his first 3-4 albums, i almost mentioned him before, but wasnt sure it fit. its more minimal, with piano/synth, but i do think he falls into some part of the category.
Hahaha! 😂 A lot of mainstream electronic music acts still sound similar to one another. Listen to the recent releases from Spinnin Records. Despite various artist names, most of their recent releases sound like they were produced by one overworked ghost producer. 🤣 Deadmau5 will always be the standard for how I want my mixes to sound. (I may not always hit the mark of a clean and tight mix with everything I make, but I try.)
KRAFTWERK! I KNEW there was a name or two I was forgetting. 🤦♂️ Uh, oops, lol.
+1 for autechre
And Daphne oram and laurie spiegel are interesting.
