Mixing and mastering is so critical for creating an acceptable recording (especially the mix, since no one understands the intent of the piece more than you, the artist). And the only thing I've seen that helps one in the process is constant exposure to well engineered recordings to serve as a constant guide.
It is an art form in itself.

only looking at the waveforms in the video image, I would choose the left version.
I agree based on that image. Turning the volume up is a way better solution than slamming a mix IMO.
I think that is just to illustrate the idea that “their” mix is louder than “your” mix. The video itself has nothing to do with compression or slamming a mix, and the image doesn’t appear in the video. It’s just about how we perceive loudness at different frequencies. Nothing mind blowing but it’s a good intro to the concept.
Just one piece of the giant puzzle called mixing and mastering, I’d never tried this before and found it to be a useful piece in the arsenal but as always, YMMV.
