Can I shape volume envelope on MIDI loop?

I think (recall seeing a video) I can edit each note's volume. Is there a way to shape overall volume envelope without editing each note? Thanks!

You could automate control of either the midi channel’s fader or the volume of the instrument’s channel.

Thanks. I was hoping the MIDI editor allowed shaping the volume envelope. Could not find this in the online manual. Would automating control do that?

The piano roll doesn’t have a volume envelope. Try manually adjusting the midi channel’s fader. If that has the desired result, recording automation that adjusts it, will accomplish what you want.

If you aren’t sure how midi automation works, see the automation examples in the Sample Projects/Tutorials folder. There is a wiki page that provides detailed information about how automation via MIDI works.

Agreed, it could do it. As a programmer I love the flexibility. To just make music, isn't it a lot of wiring to do every time I want to tweak an envelope?

@des1303, can you clarify what you want to do? It kind of sounds to me like you're really asking if you can alter the envelope of the sound, such as changing the attack and decay per note?

Or are you talking about altering the volume of the loop as a whole, not individual notes? Like having the loop start off quiet, rise in volume, then fall back to quiet over the course of the loop?

"Envelope" implies altering of volume over time. If that's what you're after, the scope of the volume adjustment over time is important.

Another way I could guess at interpreting your question is asking whether there's a way to adjust note volumes using vertical bars laid out across the piano roll, like some piano roll editors have.

The type of envelope you want isn’t available in the piano roll at this time. I don’t know what to advise beyond that.

  • Thanks @espiegel123, learning about MIDI automation was helpful anyway. Amazingly flexible.

    Yes, this one.

    Yes, this one.

Drambo running as an FX on the color you want to control could do this very neatly, with just one or two modules, but I think you're better off just recording a volume sweep as midi into the clip or a separate one, and using that to control the volume. It's easier to do than it may seem.

  • Wow. Thanks so much, @wim and @espiegel123
