syncing midi for tempo between 2 iPads running Loopy Pro

I want use my new iPad for everything pretty much everything (live looping scenario) but thought it would be good to have a Lumbeat app running on my old iPad so I could interact with it in real time.

I have got his working with Ableton Link, but I think it should be doable without using that. Link has had some downsides in the past in my experience.

I have 1 audio interface, but have both iPads connected via a USB hub. I did experiment with bluetooth which kinda worked too, but wired seems safer.

My old iPad has the headphone output so I don't need to run audio to run over the connection.

Should I need Link to do this or am I missing something in just using midi clock between the 2 apps?

I tried to just run Soft Drummer standalone on the old iPad, but couldn't get it to connect to Loopy on the new on, so I've hosted it in Loopy which was working.

thanks!

Generally-speaking , Link is the most reliable synching protocol. Your other choice would be midi clock. In my experience, the Lumbeat apps are better behaved using link.

If you connect one iPad as the hub host, you can connect the other app to the hub and turn network midi on in loopy pro and run link via wire which will be more reliable than WiFi. Network midi will need to be on on both devices.

  • Ok thank you, I recall earlier in LP history things connected via Link would sometimes be the correct tempo but like a bar or a couple of beats out. I guess that's sorted now.

I've just been playing for a few hours and the sync seems pretty reliable using Link.

I don't recall that being the case except perhaps very early on. Link has been reliable for quite some time. Keep in mind that link is not like MIDI clock. Properly implemented link is bar aligned. There are occasional apps that do not wait for link's sync quantum and can start out of sync -- but they start out of sync with any link host.
