Cool Blue (featuring pbelgium)

This is a take on a recent post by @pbelgium called Blue In Green. It was originally written by Bill Evans for Miles Davis. We both took liberties with the song, so I thought a new title might be appropriate. I found that "Cool Blue" refers to a shade of blue with a green "bias", so I thought it would be a perfect title. He kindly provided his guitar solo and I did the best I could to apply a subtle accompaniment that maintained his original feel. For some reason, I thought of James Dean when I listened. I turned the mix down a bit, so it's not on your end. It just felt better to me that way.

Being the first to comment I can be the first to say 'Kind of Cool'! When you suggested Paul add an acoustic bass and offered your skills, I was intrigued to hear how it would turn out. Excellent job, especially adding a subtle beat over a rubato guitar track.

  • @AndyHoneybone Rubato... that's the word I was looking for. I like how his playing appears to be loose and freeform, but when you put down a solid 78 bpm tempo, you can really hear how it follows the clock perfectly, but ebbing and flowing. It swings. I tried putting a few other things with this such as a muted trumpet (Miles-like) and a piano, but they just got in the way.

  • Very cool @Paulieworld! I'm amazed that you could put a rhythm section to this, definitely some 'ebbing and flowing' going on in my playing! How did you do it?
Really like the Jimmy Dean picture, very apt. The picture of him walking in the rain in Times Square (?) would have worked as well I think. The epitome of cool.

@pbelgium How did I do it? I didn’t really do anything. Your groovy guitar playing just swings to the beat. I just hung on and went along for the ride. In your playing I hear shades of Pat Martino (RIP) and Pat Metheny. Two wild and crazy guys named Pat. I had the pleasure of seeing Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays (RIP) two times. Both at local colleges in smaller, laidback venues. Good times.

I did a search for the picture you mentioned. That would have been cool, too. James Dean was quite a character. Too bad he died so young. He went out in spectacular fashion. He was only 24. He died a few days before I was born. I like to think he was looking for another ride and chose me. Who knows?

Anyway, my honey bunny is making one of my favorites for dinner. Her own recipe. Baked chicken with ‘secret’ spices, broiled potatoes with melted butter and sour cream, and green beans with thinly sliced almonds. Doesn’t need any salt. I’m a lucky guy, for sure.

If you ever want to collaborate, let me know. I dig this stuff. Have a groovy, peaceful day!

  • Really amazing! When I listened before reading your commentary, I thought "this feels like a Miles Davis joint". The "drink a whiskey sour while smoking" kind of Blues vibe. I really love it.

Hi Jim. @pbelgium really came up with some outstanding riffs. I thoroughly enjoyed working (playing) this. It makes me want to get my gear out of storage and start playing again. However, if I did that, I know I would be calling up the few remaining guys and getting a jam started. Next thing, we would be calling Joey asking to set up a few gigs. He would do it, too! I really miss that stuff, but I know I'm too old to be doing that anymore. It was great fun while it lasted. I can live with that. Thanks for listening and commenting. Hope all is well, bro.

  • A super mellow and enjoyable listen guys, thanks for making and sharing!

I'm alright. Just stuck in a music creation rut at the moment lol. Happens from time to time.

And, I'll say this. You're never too old to enjoy playing music with friends. ❤️ Touring and lugging around equipment, perhaps. But not just for getting together to jam. 😎

@pbelgium really makes it sound so easy! That’s the hard part. Thanks for listening.

  • @jwmmakerofmusic Hey Jim. You are a young dude. I’m old enough to be your… older brother. FYI - this creative rut stuff never ends! It just comes with the territory. Get used to it and keep on keeping on. Any plans for the weekend? We’re going to the movies tomorrow. I still ask her if she would like to go out on a date with me. So far she hasn’t turned me down! 16 or 65, I think girls just like that stuff. Take your lady out for a good time on the town. Have a great weekend.

Exactly. I'm used to it by now. These ruts usually last a week to a month, so I'm staying busy doing other things like learning new-to-me songs on the piano for performing out in public and drawing little doodles here and there.

My lady lives in Canada, and me in the US. But, I'll be videochatting with her tomorrow and Sunday. Otherwise I'm just resting all weekend, and maybe a spark of inspo will hit me for creating a new track. We shall see. But I'm just going to take shit easy this weekend. I'm almost fully recovered from a nasty cold this past week, so yeah, self care is a must. :)

  • The accompaniment is perfectly pitched to the vibe of the solo. Like stepping into a 50s jazz joint, the room is filled with smoke and all the players are wearing shades.

  • As cool as a northern England December night 🆒😎
