Steam Deck + Windows partition: A valid desktop production environment?

edited November 2025 in Desktop

Good evening ladies, gents, and non-binary frients!

Anyone attempt Ableton from of a Windows partitioned Steam Deck? Could it work as a viable baseplate for a loopy/iPad workflow?

I'm blessed with a friend offing their steamdeck my direction at a much lower than MSRP act of the season (1tb mod, Windows partition set. And also a graphics card over 2x more than what my kid currently has at a similar deal. Grateful indeed, I am)

I haven't had a desktop for a number of years but have built a nice collection thanks to the Desktop Sales thread (thanks guys!)

Could a Steamdeck get me back into a desktop setup?

Side wondering: any interesting daws/instruments compatible with steamos?

  • Bitwig works natively on Linux! Had a play of it on a Steam Deck previously and it seemed to work just fine :)

There’s also a native Linux version of Reaper, but I haven’t tried it myself.

    Good evening!
TBH I'd rather get a Windows tablet with decent screen size, otherwise it's not much fun to work with Ableton on it.

  • Haven't tried partitioning my steam deck with windows. But I do use reaper + alex zolotov's stuff in linux mode. Plus blender, krita and kdenlive for graphics and motion. Works pretty well

  • If you can cope with trackers, there’s one being actively developed for the Steamdeck

Been using my Legion Go on my desk besides my iPad to make music with in Ableton Live, Bitwig. Works great. Zenbeats is the best DAW when I comes to touch I find. Brought a cradle for it to add extra ports. You really need a mouse and keyboard to manage create fully.
