MIDI re-routing app?

I have one controller I need to send notes to another keyboard with sounds.

For reasons yet to be determined the MIDI din on the controller does not seem to want to work correctly (in discussions with manufacturer) so I thought as the USB into the iPad works, why not try a software routing solution.

IE, route the incoming note data from the controller to the other keyboard (also connected to the iPad via USB).

I am looking at an app called MidiFLow, but I cannot tell from the manual if it will do exactly the task I need.

Are there any apps that will accomplish what I need, or indeed, will MidiFlow do the job? There is no trial version and I'd rather not go through the hassle or doing an Apple refund.

Do you specifically not want to use a host? Because AUM, Loopy Pro, Ape Matrix, Drambo, and other can do this just fine.

MidiFlow (the standalone app, not the Audiobus dependent one) would work. MidiFire too. I think you might find MidiFire a little easier to understand visually.

Thanks wim, Yes I am trying to avoid using a host. Essentially all I want to do is "mimic" the output of the controller MIDI din port.
I do already have MidiFire, but I have never been able to "connect" with it :) and I find it a touch arcane to use...But, after your advice here, I'll open it up again and see if I can figure it.

It should be very simple as long as both devices are recognized. On an empty canvas, hit the plus sign, add a source and destination, then just connect them together.

Yeah it was in the end....no devices were "seen" which is why it seemed difficult...had to disconnect and re-connect the USB-C hub.

It's not going to solve the issue though. It would seem the receiving device which has two ports, one of which I want to use in this case, is not core-midi compatible.

Well, at least I got a good chuckle out of that one. 🤙🏼

  • You might try AUM instead. I have a MIDI controller with two ports, and AUM "sees" them both. If AUM works, you just need to connect the source to the destination in the MIDI routing matrix; no need for anything else.

  • musikraken should do it....and a lot of other weird control stuff such as using you dog or cat as a midi controller!!!

Thx UD I will try AUM as well. Camelot Pro does not see the second port as a receiving device either. It sees it as an input device though :)

Goodness me, that might be worth getting just for the fun of it with no real work purpose in mind hahaha!! Thanks for the link :)

Nah, sorry UD it is the same as Camelot Pro - sees it as an input device but not a destination :(

I think it MIGHT be an issue with the keyboard. In this case the Studiologic Numa Compact 2 X SE .

I've bought a CME H2MIDI Pro so I will see if I can get that to work.

  • @pax-eterna I found MidiFire renames the ports the opposite to what I expect , so it might be worth rechecking with this in mind - add both input & output modules to see which responds to midi notes .

That should work. But you'll to dowbload their HxMIDI app to configure it. Not sure if the app is available on the app store - still may only be in testflight. But their website will link you to te right place.

Why are you focused on using the second port on the target synth? Is it the Numa Compact?

Yeah, Compact 2 X-SE ......for certain shows I want really simple setup, so I want to play bass and keys on two parts, and access the other two parts for organs and synths from the Alesis Vortex 2, which is set up as a second tier controller on the stand (not keytar fashion hahaha!)

This then goes into a Beatbuddy 2 pedal and then out to EV Evolve 50Ms controlled via my iPhone EV app.

Hmm. I read the Numa manual, but the description of the KEYBOARD and CONTROLLER MIDI ports is unclear to me. Are you unable to access the bidirectional KEYBOARD port from iOS?

Lol, and who doesn't want that?
